0.9 bar / 13psi - Too much boost on stock turbo?

So after I installed my new plugs and wires, my car is boosting smoothly. But I notice that it's hitting 0.9bar (13psi) in second gear. I haven't run the car too hard since I'm still on the stock timing belt (105K miles). I thought that max boost was 11.8psi for a stock turbo set up.

Does this mean that my HKS gauge is messed up or I got a wastegate problem? Does my K&N cone filter have anything to do with the spike?

I don't have a boost controller.

I'll be able to run the car hard after I change the timing belt and check it out but just wanted thoughts on this now.

Thanks!

Is the K&N filter the only thing you have done to it??? Usually any modification to air flow will increase what your car will boost on its own. 1 psi is not that big of a deal......that just means thats what your car is capable of boosting on its own.....i think most people are running around 15 psi daily on stock turbos....so yeah 13 is safe. If you get say a downpipe or exhuast.....normally it will raise your psi accordingly. Id say your motor is pretty healthy if its running 13 psi w/o a boost controller

Fuel Cut will kick in at 12psi. If you hit 13 psi without triggering fuel cut, I think there is something wrong with your boost gauge.

Healthy engine can boost up to 15psi.
Fuel cut was raised in later cars, but I don't remember what year that started.

I wonder if there's a Tanabe b-pipe on the car that 93Hardtopturbo isn't aware of. That would raise boost, too.

My fuel cut on my '94T was 16 psi.

The exhaust will definitely increase flow and give you higher boost without a boost controller. The intake will also help a little bit. As far as running higher boost it should be safe given that your motor, ignition components, and fuel components are healthy. I ran 14-17psi daily on my stock setup and it was fine. I have since upgraded though. I'd recommend that you go no higher than 13-14psi before you upgrade your intercooler though.

dummies question alert!!

guys what is fuel cut? can someone pls explained it to me?
Fuel cut is a safety mode put in by Toyota to make sure that by accident your turbo wont boost really high and blow your engine. In the map sensor, it senses boost and once you exceed 12psi it will give you a check engine light and put you in limp mode where you cant boost anymore until you turn the car off and then on again. It is to protect you from overboosting.
