What are the most common BOLT sizes for 3SGTE's?

It's been a hectic last two weeks. My check-card is on fire, but I have just about everything (purchased at least, waiting on shipping, etc) to get the motor assembeled.

However, I bought this car with the blown head gasket, straight from a Toyota dealership (previous owner chose not to have them repair it, just to sell the car), and so I got the car DISMANTLED from the block UP.

Suffice it to say, I got a big ziplock bag of bolts, none of them organized and probably half of them missing.

I've decided since I've spent so much on this longblock allready, it might as well get all new fasteners. I'm gonna buy through BoltDepot.com and just get a dozen boxes of SS grade 8 in the most common metric sizes/lengths for the engine.

Ultimately, I'll probably go buy a bolt-guide and measure all the different ones I have out there, but I was wondering if anyone has done this kind of thing and has sizes recorded, or knows them off the top of their head.

to be honest, most people don't pay attention to the actual size of the bolt, but rather to the size of the wrench required to remove the bolt or nut. This makes your job more difficult because you have to order bolts based on the the thread size and bolt length, not the hex cap size. I'm not sure where you would find all of this information in one place. The BGB will not tell you. The only thing I can think of is to put the engine back together as well as you can with the bolts you have, and then measure the unused holes to determine what additional hardware you need.

yea toyota really should've included some more detailed info on bolts in the BGB, i made a thread a while back similar to this subject but got nothing. the only thing the BGB can tell you is the torque specs for each bolt (each original bolt has a marking) according to the mark on the head. maybe you could get a hold of a tech at a dealer to see what some common bolt sizes are...

Yea, was just looking to cut some corners.

The type of info I'm looking for is not hex diameter (12mm, 14mm) but rather bolt diameter, thread pitch, and length.

Ex.

10x1.25@15mm

Was worth a shot.
Now you see the issue I was talking about :) Most people do not fully understand the sizing of threads, so they refer to the wrench size (which, for most of us, is really all that matters).
What you will find is that Toyota uses a number of different thread sizes based on the physical requirements of the fastener. A fastener that has to carry a higher tensile load will often have a finer pitch in order to increase the contact area between the fastener and the host material. To that end, you will see a lot of odd-ball sizes that can be hard to find. For example, the four bolts that mount the transmission to the block are M12x1.25. "Standard" M12 pitch is 1.75, and "fine pitch" is typically 1.5... So, toyota is actually using an "ultra fine" pitch (for lack of a better term). I found this out the hard way :banghead:.

Actually, it was my fault. I didn't read the question very well.

Found a free tool that might be helpfull to the community.. it's a thread gauge/length measure - just print it out and glue to some cardboard...

http://www.boltdepot.com/fastener-information/Printable-Fastener-Tools.aspx

As an alternative, I really want one of these:

They're only $1.50, but shipping to me is $7!! haha.. does anyone know if they sell this kind of thing at hardware stores? I checked homedepot and sears.com and couldn't find anything.

I can tell you that almost every thing on these cars is a 1.25 thread pitch. The exceptions are almost all 1.0 thread pitch.

Don't go by the size of the head. Most aftermarket bolts have a head that is 1mm larger than the Toyota part for a given shaft width. Or to put it another way a Toyota bolt will have a 12mm head while the aftermarket will usually have a 13mm head for what is otherwise the same bolt.
