SW20 Full Digital Gauge Cluster --- Who is interested?

We have been working with a manufacturer to potentially bring a customized sw20 digital gauge cluster to the market. It would be full replacements for the tach, speedo, sides and middle gauges. Basically you could either send in your cluster and for a small fee we would disassemble it and install the new gauges or we could just simply provide you with the gauges to install yourself.

Here is a rough draft of what we are looking at. Pay no attention to the little box under each set of numeric spots that is for the manufacturers use only. The speedo would be larger and still have the spot for the odometer underneath it. The tach would have a sweeping bar along with the numeric output and there is enough room to add another gauge in there if we so desire.

We can add a sweeping bar on the speedo too but that might just be too many sweeping bars.

Right now we are still early in the design stages so are open to ideas so feel free to modify the image above with your thoughts. Please keep in mind that we would need 10 people to be interested in this in order to make it affordable. Price will be dictated by the number of gauges and features we all select.

can you have a 6th digit for the odometer? and can you make it so it reads what the oem cluster currently says?

also, is it plug in play
Yes we can add a 6th digit. It can read what the oem cluster currently says. The unit will still be plug and play as far as all of the factory indicators and such but the new gauges will have to have pick up their signals from factory wiring and or whatever sender will be included based on what gauges are chosen

I think it needs something...it just looks too blank having that big of a gauge just by itself...
I agree, that is why I am seeking feedback on what would look best

Ballpark on cost would help me gauge my interest. I really like the idea.
I don't have firm or even soft prices just yet but I assure you it will be reasonable

it should be more spread out like the s2k cluster in a sense
Are you referring to the tach sweeping bar, or what exactly... I envisioned the tach sweeping bar filling up more of the full gauge spot, these are more of the behind the scenes blueprints to give rough ideas...

Maybe something like this...

...with oil temp, oil pressure and MPH on top.

Definitely need a 6th digit on the odo, that's been my biggest complaint with digi gauges so far. An easy way to take up some of the dead space would be to make the 7-segment display size for rpm and mph larger, though I'm not sure how cost effective that would be. I think a sweep on the speedo would be fine, personally. Also, I'd bet oil temp and pressure would also be welcome additions for a lot of people, if you're adding more gauges in the tach/speedo space. Finally, 3 questions.

1) Are you planning to make any provisions for folks with the 91-92 mechanical speedo (package with an electric sender and sub-harness, for example)?

2) Would there be a possibility to buy just the middle gauges, for those of us who already have the side gauges replaced?

3) Are you working with VEI on this? Looks similar to some of their other stuff I've seen.

Glad to see somebody taking a stab at this, good luck Dustin!

I think the odometer under the tach is better, and have the speed-o out to the left with some ancillary gauges.

The grouping (in the 2nd pic of my last post) of the 4 guages, where the speed-o will be, can probably be tweaked a little better. I just threw them in there in paint...

^ all good questions, and thoughts...

1) my current plans would say yes... we will see as get deeper into the project
2) that would be my plan, for those that have already purchased EMS's gauges
3) yes, we use their wideband gauges heavily in the 350z market and so I have been conversing with them for a month or so about getting something like this together

He already gotcha.

^ no that is great! it gives a better feel for the idea! I wish I had the skills/tools to do what you do... I have visions but can not show them very well...

I am thinking run the the tach sweeping bar from 7 o clock to 2 o clock and that either gives more room for the odometer in its current position or maybe we offset the tach digital read out and odometer more to the lower corner of the tach gauge... your thoughts (or an example to see would be great!)

Thanks
Dustin

Squeezed the wideband into this one.

Ok, I really like the look of this one. This might be enough to make me get rid of the setup I already have and go this route. It'd fit all the gauges I need into the cluster with no need for any pods, and eliminate the extra gauge I have in there that I don't really need (EGT). The only thing I'd like better aesthetically would be to make the RPM and MPH 7-segment size larger, just to make them stand out.

Also, if you look at VEI's single display 52mm gauges, the majority of them have an LED sweep. Not sure how much it would add to cost and I'll concede that it might get distracting at times, but I think with the layout as it is, there will be a lot of empty space and using the guts of their off-the-shelf sweep gauges may eliminate some of that. I'm also having visions of a killer start-up sweep that would be possible with this

I don't really have any good way to make a video animation, but I'll throw something together in powerpoint tonight to illustrate.
