Come on everyone knows the rarest combo is a 91 crimson red t-topped N/A...

Actually I went and looked at a 2 back in the spring and the guy who owned it had belonged to some local club. He told me there was some other memebr who had had a 93 hardtop turbo in signal yellow. That I think is a pretty rare combo.

the 3(?) convertable mk1s?
where are you people getting your numbers?

http://www.mr2ownersclub.com/mk1convertible/

FYI, Toyota USA doesnt have any of these numbers documented....i know because i contacted them...the only numbers they have documented are the MR2's sold in a given year (note: this is different than the number of certain a certain model year sold as a 93 model could be sold new in 92 or in 93, etc)...they do not have the number of 94 hardtops sold documented or any other weird configuration...many people spout off numbers (i.e. only 350 MR2's sold as a 95 model year, etc) but nobody really knows for sure the exact numbers....they are all guesses and approximations

the only number in this thread that holds any water with me is SPYDERBOB's (or SpongeBob as i affectionately call him ;)) claim of only 1, 93 Solar Yellow (Signal Yellow?) hardtop being made as he is a very long-standing and reputable MR2 owner (he bought his 87 MKI convertible brand new ;)) and heard this from a man who worked for Toyota during the hay day of the MR2 (mid 90's, as he stated) when Toyota was more likely to know this information....unfortunately for us, Toyota didn't keep records, however, and all this information was lost over the years after the MR2 went out of production

I know that the 3 1986 MK1 convertibles and the 1 solar yellow MK2 are the rarest.

The 3 86's were on of each color.

I don't for a second doubt they told you this but is it really true, do you think? My hunch is that somewhere in the bowels of Toyota, in either the U.S.A. or Japan or both, there is raw data consisting of serial numbers, production records, export documents, import documents, codes respecting serial numbers, etc., from which somebody could figure out exactly how many 91s with x factory options and 94s with y factory options were sold in this country or that country if - and this is the key thing - IF somebody thought it was worth expending the effort deciphering and collating the data.

My suspicion is that they just do not think it's worth it. That's my hunch, anyway, for what it's worth.

I know a Toyota exec. who works on product development for the North American market. I'll ask him if my hunch is right and report back after I talk to him.

Problem is that you have a lot of 1991 cars that are actually 1990 models and 1995 models that are actually 1994 models. Since the rest of the world, ie Japan, counts the calendar year as the year of the car

i wonder if that 93 yellow hardtop is still lurking somewhere. is it safe to assume it isnt owned by someone on this board?

if i had it and toyota wanted it...i think i would actually be honored to sell it back to them. well...depending on the compensation.

it makes you wonder...back when this was bought brand new. i wonder if the owner had any idea what they were buying was one of a kind? how cool would that be if the dealer told you the car you were buying would be the only one like it ever sold in the US.

There are 3 preprototype convertibles, I believe they were 87s but may have been late 86s. The actual 15 prototypes were all early 97s. Although they are rare I don't consider them as contenders since they weren't true production cars. If i can find the original photo I'll be able to confirm whether the 3 were 86s or 87s.

If you stick with US productions cars
It should be (as stated) one of the 93 turbo hardtops (some
color, option list). I have a blue metallic 93 turbo and I have
only heard of one other one in the US (mine and the other
were recently for sale)

i think the rarest mr2 is a 91 n/a t-top. from the looks of it it seems like the 93 yellow turbo hardtop is the rarest

worldwide, does anyone know how rare the mk3 hardtop is?
I was under the impression that the MKIII hardtops were an option. You can purchase it to replace the convertible.

you're right...i believe it's a TRD part, but i could be wrong on that...there aren't any true hardtops...they are removeable
