the 85-86 MR2's have 2 speakers in the dash and mini subwoofer under the driver's seat. 87-89 MR2's hat 4 speakers, 2 in the dash, and 2 bein the heads of where people sit, and also has the mini subwoofer under the driver's seat.

Depends, On what else you can do. I have a sub under the seat with the front and rear piller speakers in mine, they were stock. I replaced them with Blaupunkt's and used the oem sub, for a so so system. It's had to find room for nice 15" subs in the ole girl. So I suffer with the best I can fit. Try www.crutchfield.com you can look up what fits by model and year.

would you want some custom door mounts for a 85-86 that will fit a 6.5 and a tweeter.

You can still do 4in in your dash. Just adds to the sound and helps out a lot. I had these in my 85 and loved them.

If you can find them "NOS", you can use some 4T's in the dash. Pioneer and Kicker both made OEM fit speakers for this location and can still be had if you know where to look. These are an exact fit and seal up the cutout perfectly. An alternative is to use a 4" with the break away ear tabs (not the square frame style). If the latter technique is used, you will need to angle the remaining 2 tabs being careful not to break them away and caulk any gaps left in the cutout.
Anyway, dash speakers will sound OK if you use a subwoofer. On their own they will suck. I don't even bother with rear speakers - sounds better without.
I run a single 8 behind the passenger seat for simplicity and light weight, not to mention leaving the driver's seat free to recline. Believe it or not the factory amp works "well" to power the sub, plus best of all it is already mounted, wired, hidden, and crossed over. The technique is to simply remove the 5" speaker in the enclosure, and extend the wiring to the new sub box. This won't break any windows, but will sound decent, and is quick, and cheap. More on this later...I will make a write-up when time permits.

Funny how good a good set of 4" can sound in the MKI... I took the speakers I had in my MKI and put them in my Supra and they're so quiet and dull, but in the MKI they sounded fantastic

I guess 2x the interior space is the reason... What a piss off though :D

The position / angle of the speakers is the biggest reason for such a difference since the speajers "shoot" right at you in an MKI. Too bad they (Toyota) didn't feel a need for an enclosure for the front speakers on the MKI as they did for all their 4T equipped cars from around 86' on. Clearance was probably the issue, not to mention lack of interest in high quality audio in the early 80's when this car was in the works.

I put a set of Boston Accustic 4" in my dash. The passenger side had more room than the drivers side. So I beat the crap out of the dash support bar until it fit
no comment

On another note, the Pioneer 4T's even have the same plug as the factory speakers, so you can have a set completely installed in less than 5 minutes with no beating, bending, or other abnormalities.

I recently bought my 86 mr2 and was surprised it only has two dash speakers. What is really surprising is how good the audio quality is considering. I don't see a need to add any speakers to the car. The engine is the most useful audio component you can invest in.

Side note: I replaced my tape deck with a Kenwood MP-225B CD/MP3 player and would recommend it to everyone. Lots of features and a cheap price (Fry's Electronics, $99).

IMO, I don't really like the pioneer 4T's...
They are cheap ($20-35) they fit perfectly, and sound decent enough for most people. Sure they are not great, but then again, if someone expects to build their MR2 into a "stereo car", I feel for them. High dollar speaker in the MKI dash is like putting Volks and P Zeros on a Yugo, since there is no enclosure and no way to seperate standing waves front and rear. The only real advantage of an expensive dash speaker in an MKI would be power handling (if an amp is used), and of course the psychological effect of having high end speakers.
I have been an installer since 97', so I have an ear for high end systems, but with the many MKI's I have owned over the years, even I accept the car's shortcomings as a "stereo car". I simply throw a set 4T's - either Pioneer 1018's or Kicker 402i in the dash, used with a single (small) sub, and enjoy the car for what is was meant (curves). But I know this is a sensitive subject, and people swear by brand X, a zillion watts, etc, so to each his own.

I had some inexpensive Blaupunkt 4" speakers kicking around the garage that I salvaged from my Mazda B2200 pickup before I got rid of it. The original speakers in my MR2 were shot, so I made the Blaupunkts fit into the dash. Rather than beat up the car, I simply used tin snips to cut off two of the mounting tabs, replicating the 4T design. You should be able to do this with any 4" speaker.

It's dark outside now, but I can snap and post a pic later if you want to know what I'm talking about.
