What's your best recipe?

This is not a "dreamers guide", I simply want to know what it would truly take to get a 500hp car 5 times down a 1/4 (somewhat reliable). Starting with a stock MR2, 5s/3s/4a/1zz stock mr2 car, any gen. Bench racing with backed up proof.

I have been an MK1 owner and currently own an E30 and this has become a pretty entertaining thread on my e30 forum, and I would love to see the discussion and debate that it brings up here.

E30 forum says swap a 2.8L block and add a turbo, you desperately need friends to tune it to make the $ goal.

What say MR2OC? What's the best MR2 500hp anarchist's recipe say?

I don't see a possible way for this to happen on an Mr2. The 3sgte is good for 400. So you'd have to go the 5sfe route, but youd need a 3s head, so the engine work would cut MOST of your budget right there.

a 1zz (lol) is garbage, and the 2zz needs to be opened up and built for anything more than 250. the c60's wont survive past 300torque, so youd need to get the e153 plate to convert to 5speed. Big money yet again.

I think 500 could be done. Sport Compact Car built a MK2 years ago and their original goal was to double the hp without opening the engine. After they hit it they wanted to 500hp without going into it. On the dyno run that they broke 500hp they popped the engine. Not because the engine just gave up, but because they forgot to turn on the auxiliary fuel pump they were running and engine went real lean and poof. They did break the 500 mark though before poof. It did take lots of trial and error of different combinations, turbos, etc., but that was also kind of the point of the build. To see what did what. Things seem to be pretty sorted now though for making big power with the 3sgte. For $2000 you will need to score some free tuning.

i used to own a e30. Those guys were crazy. They would find random turbos in junk yards and bolt it to their cars. run bear minimum megasquirt setups and Flux welded manifolds.

I was actually more of a e30tech guy. But dont think its quite do able on the mr2. for that price. 5 grand for sure 2g not quite

Nitrous would get you 500 HP for under $2000.
Nitrous does a great job of getting oxygen (and nitrogen) into the engine, but the stock CT26 is still a cork on the back side. A couple years ago there was a dyno of a guy running a 100hp shot of nitrous on a MR2. It made a ton of torque, but the stock CT26 housing choked it to 275whp (about 350hp).

I'm not saying don't use nitrous, just saying it's not gonna do all the work itself.

Since the OP sad 500hp and not 500 Wheel HP, we can stipulate that we are shooting for 400whp, and only for a couple of drag strip runs....No problem (sorta).

Gotta go old school to be this cheap...

1. ecu - stock
2. ignition - stock (I'm assume our project car has a stock ignition in decent condition)
3. fuel - stock injectors, modified rail ($75), and adjustable rising rate fuel pressure regulator (BEGI rrfpr $76 on Ebay right now), 340 lph Aeromotive in-tank pump ($75), and some race gas for a little safety ($50). Total cost $276
4. nitrous kit - just in case we need a little help - NOS Sniper wet kit is $350. But it's going to cost another $50 to get the bottle filled.
5. exhaust - don't run one
6. intercooler - stock, it's only a couple drag strip runs and the race gas will resist knock pretty well, plus the nitrous comes out of the tank COLD
7. boost controller - manual $50

8. turbo kit - probably the most important piece, and certainly the area where the most "cheating" on this would take place i.e. I'd buy a $1500 turbo and then get my buddy with a welder to make me a downpipe, type line. I've got a better idea...

We've got $1274 left in the budget. We need a turbo that will support 350whp. Check the MR2Oc classifieds for any used ATS TD06 or KO SB kits. Both are easily capable of 350 whp.

Setting up the BEGI RRFPR is gonna be tricky but not impossible. Hopefully we can borrow a wide band and maybe some dyno time??

500rearwheel hp is impossible at 2 grand. I honostly think its pretty much not possible with out major hookups cause even used parts to hit 400 rwhp is gonna bust 2gs fast.

Assuming u already have a mint gen3 or 4
Used parts.

Td06 20g or bigger gt series 1000 bucks
600cc min injectors (rx7 ported maybe) 300
ported rail and adjustble fpr. 100
dual or min a single 255 supra or wal pump
Mega squirt 200
Skills to self tune
No exhaust
Used nitrus kit 200 bucks
and the block probably wont last long as its a ghetto unreliable set up. But thats the cheapest way i would think possible... And i donno if it would even hit 400 bhp
