nice how do you get your hands on one of those ha ha. but seriously im doing a blacktop swap maybe this winter. but is there anyway i could get my stock 16v 4age to that level of performance? its the stock N/A 4age currently in my 89 mr2
They pop up on ebay every so often. About 20k for the motor IIRC

BT 20v will not hit the same numbers NA.

I just want to point out how nice everyone is being to you in an inital d thread. Try that over at club 4ag lmao.

Anyway you're talking about when Bunta secretly swaps the engine out in the 8 6? Not a formula atlantic engine. Those are 16v engines. Tak's engine is a 20v 4age built for the fia group a racing series. It was a kind of touring car series I guess.

A year or two back, you could have bought a Group A 20v for $11,000 complete with the Group A spec AE101 it came in, plus all kinds of spares. I guess it was run in the Macau grand prix every so often. Pass racing had it, never heard what came of the car though. From what I remember, it made either 220 or 240hp in as it sat.

Yep........ it just takes $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

btw... 220, or even 240 is old hat now. Loynings Engine Service(highly reputed 4AGE engine builder) has squeezed 267 from a 4AGE @ UNDER 10k rpm! THIS I've seen with my own eyes. I also know they are always building tall blocks(Loyning speak for 7AGE) that regularly hit 250hp, and 170#/ft of torque.

So if you would like to embarrass that FIA 20V, just send your money to Loynings.......

are we talking 5000 or 50000 as money is concerned
If you have to ask you can't afford it. There are several ex-race motors on sale now for somewhere North of $12K IIRC, all built by Loynings/Hasselgren etc.

[EDIT] filonin beat me to it.

That is Chris Dorsey's AE86, I know the owner/car/engine pretty well, it's not build for the sorta power numbers thrown around above.

You CAN build something a bit less dramatic that costs about 1/2 as much, and will last as long as you maintain it - otherwise????

Right now there is a mild built(170 ish hp) Hasselgren engine on sale on Club4AG for under $7000. If you were looking a few days ago it was under $4000!!! - http://forums.club4ag.com/zerothread?id=104660

I'm running a 160-170 hp(145 whp) 4AGE right now, that is fully emissions compliant(Oregon) and is very tractable and driveable. It has Loynings headwork, and machine work done to the block. I paid a total of $2600 for the Loynings machining. The total for the engine(w/o management) was about $4600

Initial D is a tv show. its not real. It feels realistic but its really not, a racing engine isn't meant for driving long distances, they wear real quick. Initial D is great but theres no way that half the cars that get beat by takumi do in real life. No matter how good or bad the drivers are on either side.

Maybe you haven't seen Best Motoring before, but rest assured, in the right hands an ae86 can beat just about anything it's likely to meet on the mountain downhill.

Best Motoring is an entertainment based tv show/magazine. They care more for ratings and views than fairness in a race. Id like to see a near stock(foglights and a sticker) ae86 beat a twinturbo rx-7 with mods, that could be 200hp per rotor and still be reliable, and its not like an rx-7 is a huge crappy handling car, its one of the best. Dont get me wrong i love Initial D its one of my all time favorite anime's but its frankly not true.

What i realized when i used to be more involved in racing is that often times like filonin said, the skill of the driver decides the race. I know the AE86 is a very capable car, especially for it's age. I've seen guys in AE86 dust others with 2000+ newer vehicles, but ultimately i think the credit in those cases go to the drivers, especially when on is highly skilled or facing a poorly skilled opponent.

Chyrio, the short answer is "no". Not revving to 12k rpm, not naturally aspirated. A short search will reveal that this horse has been beaten to death.

If you're planning on swapping a 20v engine in your car, I recommend that you go ahead with that swap and be happy with the 165bhp it provides (I know I am!). When you grow tired of it, there are some nice upgrades you can do in the form of camshafts, mild head work, stand-alone engine management and others to keep you naturally aspirated and make more power. Or you can go the forced induction route with a turbo or supercharger. Putting ex-racing engines in street cars is a big "no-no" unless you're pulling in six figures, which judging by the fact that you drive a late '80's Toyota, probably isn't the case ;)

What you see below is a $45,000 race engine in the bay of a race car. They are actually built to go in open-wheel formula cars, but Hasselgren put this one in an AE86 drift car:
