Hood latch broken or cable bad?

OK, I finally got my hood open after all this time. I pulled the grill off and could almost get the latch to work. I could feel the the cable was attached at the ball end of the latch, but the cable housing was not attached any longer to the latch. Its hooked on by sliding it into a little U that holds it in place. I hooked it back up and try to actuate the hood latch by hand. On my Jeep and other cars its easy to just stick a screw driver in the pace the striker goes and press down. On the MR2, it took nearly everything I had to get it to lock. I got it though. THen checked the cable and unlatched it from in the car to make sure it worked. I then mounted the latch back to the car and couldnt get the hood to close no matter how much I slammed it down or adjusted the lock or the rubber bumpers on the hood.
No problem I thought, I figure it out in the morning. BUT then I tried to lock it again by hand just to make sure it worked. After some extreamly hard pushing, it locked. Then the latch inside wouldnt open it again. The cable housing had come unattached again.
Does this sound like the latch is broken and working to hard causing the cable to slip out of its grove, or could the cable plastic be bad so I need to route a new cable? If its the latter I may just go with hood pins.
