Whats the difference between the all trac 3sgte and the MR2 3sgte? Externally they are different. Yes I know there is search but its 3:30 in the morning and im tired... thanks for looking

Yeah, the all trac US model had a top mount (on top of the engine under the vent) air to air IC. The JDM version had a top mount water to air IC. Other than that I'm pretty sure the 'engine' itself is exactly the same.

Not all JDM versions had the W/A intercoolers in the 2nd gen 3s. Only the RC version (aka Type A and Carlos Sainz sp?) did - which are rare. Most ST185 clips come with a/a intercoolers. The third gen 3s in the celica (ST205) all came with W/A intercoolers.

Im trying to do some research on this myself, because my brother has a 93 Celica that is interested in getting boosted. I know the Alltrac trans needs to be modified for the MR2 use, since it was an allwheel drive trans. You can get a kit to eliminated the rear drive shaft. When i dig up more i will post more here, but until then, let us know what you find out and good luck!

Actually, you can get 5th gen all trac JDM clips for pretty cheap. They come complete with everything you need (make sure you get the driveshaft and the rear drivetrain parts). I had a 91 Celica GT that I did an all trac swap on. The All Trac is an AWESOME car, of course, the swap didn't include things like suspension and brakes, you still have to do that stuff yourself.

I think its a bad idea for a N/A MR2 owner to get an alltrac clip. MR2T clips are not much more expensive and you get the E153 tranny, correct axels, correct intercooler and piping, correct alternator location, correct oil pan. I am not saying it can't be done - I have a MR2T and E153 in my fwd Celica - however, you are complicating the swap and leaving yourself the problem of sourcing other parts to make it work. Bottom line it comes down to cost and ease of use and I would be willing to bet that buying a MR2T clip will be almost as economical and a whole lot easier.

Like how much would it be to get a celica all-trac into my MR2? I will sell the transmission, get a tranny, take a supra side mount (or something of equal quality) and run some home fabbed IC piping. Whats the problem with oil pan and alternator location?

That's a pretty damned good deal. I think the engine is basically the same. I know you can run the A2W IC on it and that some people really prefer that anyways. What's the worst that could happen? You end up selling it to a 5th/6th gen Celica owner?

I have an ST185 engine in my MR2.

The blocks are the same. The electronics are the same. All the coolant piping is different, their wiring harnesses are different (cause the short route of the MR2).

The mechanic basically had to strip down both down to a longblock, and then swap all the housings and everything onto the ST185 engine. Now it looks just like an MR2 entine (cept you can tell its an ST185 cause of the intake manifold).

If you could get a SW20 clip, do it. I wouldnt recommend swapping an alltrac engine into an NA. If youre just replacing a blown engine in an already turboed car, just swap everything over (you have to relocate the alternator too) and it should all work. Mine did.

Heres a picture.

As Luni mentioned, very similar in almost all respects. The alltrac doesn't have a oil level sensor/switch in the oil pan, just the oh____ pressure switch in the head. The alternator bracket, power steering stuff and coolant lines are different as well.

You can run the A/W IC on either the mr2 or alltrac/GTFOUR. It's trickier finding one than it is to setup and install.

Please don't talk as though you know what you are talking about when you don't. That's how disinformation gets spread, and you're making it worse by repeating it.

There's no way to use the alltrac tranny on an mr2, furthermore it is stupid to try to block off the rear driveshaft instead of just buying a proper mr2 (lsd if you can swing it) tranny.

luni pretty much has it covered.
if your just replacing a 3s with one from a 185, no biggie...but if your trying to SWAP...not a good idea...on the celica boards we do the same when peeps ask about mr2 clips for the celica...not a good idea for a swap...but for a replacement no problem, just a matter of swaping some various little things out..

You CAN run with the rears blocked on the alltrac tranny but you wouldnt be laying down all the power you should.. It doesnt work right. Youre better off using an MR2 tranny.

Whoa, calm down there chief. I was trying to help the situation by relaying what information i have found out in regards to the celica, and in return i found out more information (thank you very much JeffreyO!) and that is a little process known as learning. I didn't intend to spread 'disinformation' and that is why this is a web board, so that other people can chime in and dis/prove information.

My 2Cents: get the motor and stuff, then sell it for more and use that towards a swap.
