Can you swap USDM gauge cluster with a JDM gauge cluster?

I recently had a gen3 3sgte swapped into my 93' N/A. The original gauge cluster was left in my mr2 showing the 137k on the car. I was given the JDM cluster that shows the 28k on the turbo motor.

Can I put that gauge cluster in my mr2??? I was told you can't.....

If so, how???

If not, why?

Thanks in advance for the help.

If you put a lower mileage odo into the car, you are basically tampering with the mileage which will be flagged on the title if you decide to sell it. Think about a used car salesman rolling back odometers in his cars.

On the other hand, I beleive it would be ok if you notify the DMV and they will mark it as mileage exempt. If you don't want to do that, you could always roll the new one forward.

^Anything over 100,000 miles is titled "mileage exempt" so tampering with the odometer will not raise flags for him. They don't even put the mileage down on the title after that.

If you are that worried about the number on the odometer (why? It's just s number) then just roll it back yourself.

I see.....Thanks for the input. I never thought about it that way.

Can I change out the gauges and odometer though? Not really worried about selling it....dont have any intentions of doing that anytime soon, and besides if i did i would explain that to whoever is looking at buying it. I am basically not being completely honest with the insurance company anyway....they still think the N/A motor is in it....to heck with them lol.....they make plenty more money then they need to.....

My question at this point is.....can I do it? if so.....how???? I was told it can't be done...

Anything over 10 years is exempt... not 100,000 miles. Trust me I deal with these things everyday.

Ok....Let me try and explain....again...

1) I could care less about what the insurance company's policy is.
2) I could care less what is legal and what isn't regarding the car.
3) I could care less if I know how many mph's im going....(its not that hard to compare yourself to other cars, and its not hard to convert from kph to mph in your head.....roughly)

All I want to know is.....CAN I swap the gauges and odometer?????????

AND, HOW do I do it?????????

I appreciate everyone's input regarding the legalities, etc (in fact this is a relatively friendly and helpful forum compared to some that i have experienced where everyone just poops on each other all the time).....but that's not my question.

Can anyone answer my questions???

Well your half right.....100K does not make it exempt.
10+years will/may depending on the state or even local tax office.

For example, I had to re title the MR2 when I moved (TX-FL), the mileage simply moved over. (car has 27K but is 13 years old)
The 300ZX I had for a short time had 113,xxx on the title and was 16 years old, still wanst marked (yet) as exempt. (I bought it with 113K)

Your local tax office (or DMV) may not give you the option to put the mileage on the title, In my experience if someone goes to the tax office and does not know the mileage on the vehicle, or has lost the original title and are seeking a replacement and it is 10+ years old they will simply mark it as mileage exempt.

It's a federal law. There is no difference between states or counties. If it's over 10 years old it is exempt. Period. In my experience there will always be a value on the title for milage. It will never be blank. Wether or not it's correct doesn't matter after it's 10 years old.

Yes it can be done. if its a 93+ you will need an electronic speedo sensor for your newer dash.
Most people remove it on their tranny with the mechanical one so their 91/92 cluster works. if you want the newer cluster which is probably electonic, then you need to see which tranny sensor you have first.

Good luck

If the vehicle has been "titled" exempt the mileage entry box on the title will say "exempt" and mileage will not appear anywhere on the title. (generally-TX, GA, FL)

My experience is around 9,000-10,000 used cars purchased in my career. As part of my job I work with the business office to process titles both within the state of FL as well as in GA, TX, SC, NC, MS, & AL (mostly south east US)

On top of the fact I facilitate a dealer auction that sells around 400-500 wholesale cars a month X 8 years...aprox...43,XXX sold vehicles that I have been involved in tracking and securing a titles for.

You got your experience, I have mine.

Hmm... I'll have to look at some out of state titles tomorrow. I may have never noticed since we require a VIN inspection by the highway patrol which includes mileage.

I know what you are talking about....I have a few coworkers that I worked with in Houston that now live in KS & MO. The highway patrol or local transportatation authority has to certify every vehicle that they produce....which is nuts because of the volume those locations produce!!

You cant swap just the gauges as the speedo is to the left in the lhd cars and to the right in the rhd cars, they are cut different.
But you can change the whole cluster as its symetrical. But you would probably need to get the plugs from the harness for the jdm cluster as its probably different plugs compared to the usdm cluster. The 91 usdm (With mechanical speedo) had different plugs compared to the 95 jdm anyway.

I dont know if this is what you want to do but if it is then you know :)

Thanks for the help guys!!! That wiring schematic was a huge post!!!!! Thanks.

Now that I know it's possible....I really have to do some more research.

Sounds like a really good winter project. Dont you think? I hate to start ripping the car apart right now.....I live in Pittsburgh, I need to capitalize on the good days while i can.

But thanks again everyone!
