Anyone ever move the clutch pedal over to the left a bit?

I was curious if anyone's ever had the clutch pedal moved further out to the left on their 2? It's too inward (to the right) for my taste; I typically like the gas and brake close together, and the clutch alone, further out on the left. Plus I have big feet/shoes lol so space is a factor too. I know moving the pedal would involve liming your space to get to the footrest, but I hardly ever use it as it is. Wanted to see if anyone else felt the same way about the clutch pedal's position, and if they did anything about it? B/c at this point, I'm getting ready to take 'er to the fab shop...

Depending on the shoes I'm wearing it can be a pain. I actually have more of a problem with the distance between the gas and the brake. Couple of times I got my foot caught on the back of the brake petal when coming off the gas. I'm size 13 but at 6'5" I have trouble lifting my legs up to swap petals. Make sense??

Ok well maybe it's not all in the shoes; I'm just accustomed to having the pedal much further left. Every car I've had was like that. In fact, when I first drove my friend's Volvo C70, the first thing I commented on was "man...your clutch pedal is too far to the right." And i feel the exact same about the MR2. Force of habit I guess. Makes shifting very awkward for me, since I feel my leg and foot are in an awkward position...

Problme is when bending it, if you do it too far you are affecting the way the master cylinder rod pushes in. Move it too far and you will end up breaking something or decreasing your clutch pedal feel.

I have size 13 shoes and I have never had a problem either.

Ok well here's my question. Who's driven a car where the clutch pedal is mutch further out to the left (to compare with)?
I don't know if your going to get much help with this....

Every manual transmission car I have owned has been a Toyota, the have all been in the same place.

Judging from your username you used to own an FD? Is that what you're comparing to? I have no problem with my FD's clutch pedal. I literally switch back and forth from day to day and never even noticed if one is in a different position than the other.

I've driven and owned dozens of cars, every make and model. I've never had a problem with the clutch placement.

Just thought I'd post an update; I had a local fabricator move the clutch pedal 1.5" to the left. That's the furthest it could be moved, b/c anything more than that, and my foot would hit the footrest on the way down, possibly giving me probs when shifting since I wouldn't be depressing the clutch pedal all the way down.

I would have rathered the clutch pedal move left another half to one inch, but it's def. CONSIDERABLY better than before. My leg and foot isn't in an awkward inverted position when shifting anymore. In fact, it's *much* easier to shift now, so overall I'm very happy :)

PS: Justin, I think you now know I do own an FD and an FB. And at least for me, the difference in pedal placement b/w the RX-7s and the MR2 is like night and day. It's VERY noticeable. All 3 pedals are clustered up on the right in the MR2, while the RX-7s have the gas on the far right, a space, then the brake, then even further to the left is the clutch, solo. The fabricator (who works on tons of full race cars, not just FDs and Miatas, but even things like Porsche Factory Cup Cars, immediately noticed the narrow and rightward placement of the pedals on the 2. In fact, I didn't have to do much explaining; he just looked at me and said he knew exactly what needed to be done. So while it may not be as noticeable to some ppl, I know it isn't just in my head (or foot) lol.

can that foot rest be removed at all? I mean this may incredibI ly help ya know. I also know that awkward kinked in position your leg gets into. I'm only 5'4-5'6 depending on which doctors office I'm in. But I was in a car accident when I was four....well actually the car was in an accident with me just full force 60mph head on with my body. I walk fine but my feet are kinda turned outward alittle, not like weird where I walk different but it gets on my nerves when my knees start to hurt cause I have to twist my leg to position my foot right. I can't even heel-toe in this car I could in my RX-7 when I had it.

But back to subject can you unbolt the footrest? I know I could take the footrest out of my first gen FB. So yea just curious

Yapa, sorry to hear about your accident.

Re: the footrest, it's not like the FB where it's on the floor. The footrest in the 2 is actually elevated significantly (I'd say 1" - 2" off the bottom of the floorboard). Ie, the clutch pedal normally goes down another inch or two past where the footrest is. I havent taken it apart and/or looked at it, but it LOOKED to be that the footrest itself is mounted to a raised area, vs. it simply being a large (ie thick) footrest. If I'm right, then it'll involve some more cutting and welding to get rid of the footrest completely. If I'm wrong, and it can simply be removed via clips or screws, then I just may go back and have the pedal moved a bit more to the left. It's not like I use the footrest anyway...

Hey Josh,

I looked into it, and apparently not only is there the footrest to meddle with (which can be removed), but also the firewall itself curves inward around, behind, and to the left of the footrest. So even if I were to remove the footrest, the pedal wouldn't be able to travel the full distance to the floor - or even if it could, my foot wouldn't, since it would make contact w/ the elevated area of the footpedal first, on the way down.

So I thought about it some more, and I'm honestly happy w/ where the pedal is at present time. It's MUCH better than before, and although I'd prefer it a wee bit over (about an 1" more) to the left, it's def. acceptable as is. Plus, I don't feel like dealing w/ cutting up the firewall and welding a plate in it's place to change the contours (or trying to hammer it out etc). I have enough loose ends to take care of on the car as it is.

BUT, the good thing is, I think removing the footrest will help regardless, as I can still place my foot a bit more to the left when I press down the clutch, b/c as it is right now, every now and then, the left outer aspect of my foot catches the footrest on the way down. That should do just nicely ;)
