Just thought I'd let all know that I changed my timing belt / Idlers / water pump / oil last month almost "verbatim" to the link above (http://bobaab.awardspace.com), and want to thank ANYONE involved with the making of, and sticky to this ! Not only did the basic mechanicals of the write-up help, but all the "tips and tricks" helped even more and saved me SSOOOOO much time. My sincerest THANKS to all. David Rice

Yo Dogs.

I friggin picked up a timing "kit" today made by dayco at autozone. Not the one with the S at the end of the part number. I'ma at least find the pulley that's making my car sound like a turbo ("VEEEEEEWWWWWW VEWWWWWWWWW") If I'm a boss ill put it the new water pump, and hell, if I make exceptional time I'ma do a front crank seal. Doubt I'll get done anything but the bad pulley done so I can go whip it, whip it good, without (too much) worry.

Any chance any of you still have this write up for replacing the Timing Belt with all of the tips and tricks? It's been a few years since the last Dropbox or website hosting, and none of the links work anymore.

Thanks.

Im nkot ready to give up and call a mechanic i know i can do this so this is my situation. I bought an 5s mr2 a few months back it was running fine minus the faulty water pump that would cause it to over heat after a i freeway run but never get hot if i just stuck local. So i bought the timing kit and water pump and oil pump. While i was down there i did my oil pan gasket and decided to do my valve cover gasket for the spark plug wells new dis cap rotor and distributor gasket. I also did the spark plugs SP wires. While i had my car torn apart i cleaned off most of the electrical components and wiped grease off the block and valve cover and then proceeded to reassemble everything at the time i didnt realize how extrmely important the timing marks needed to be and so mistake after mistake was made along the way but before all this my car was running like a champ and now it sound like it wants to start but just wont complete its cycle to kick on it cranks gets fuel all the sensor have been thoroughly clean and checked and rechecked i even took apart my wiring woth a friend of mine and checked every fuse relay from front to back in accordance to the wiring diagram and repair manual so im getting spark and fuel and i dont see how i could have ruined my compression when the car was never on. Im going to adjust the timing one more time but shes been sitting in the driveway for a month and a half and its time to have her running the street again can anyone help me that was as best as i can put it

Did you fix the timing mark issue? Even being off by one tooth can make it hard to start. Did you verify you have spark actually getting to the spark plugs (Pull a plug out, leave it hooked up to the wire and ground the threads against the engine while cranking)?

Is the distributor the original one or did you replace that too?

Are you certain you have the correct spark plug wires going to the correct plugs on the distributor cap?

Did you install the belt, release and torque the tensioner, spin the engine 180 degrees, and then release and retorque the tensioner?

The timing is on point i checked and rechecked with that little swivel mirror my timing marks are spot on. Im about to do a spark test right now but the spark coming from my ignition coil is an orange isnt that not good? i did my ignition coil and still same color so imma go get a control module from the junkyard tomorrow. Original distributor and yes the firing order i got off of this forum and other verified it was good. As far as turning the cam gear 180 and torquing down again no i did not but i went like 6 full revolution and my timing stayed on point

Sort it out yet? Try...
  • Remove timing belt off the cam pulley.
  • Rotate cam pulley 1 full turn
  • Reinstall timing belt
Sounds like your cam is a full revolution out-of-sync from the crank, hence the compression issue. Adjusting by a tooth or two (or three) would not do anything since you're so far off already. Sounds exactly what I ran into on a 5SFE Celica many years ago.

Hey mods,

can we sticky this website? It is a VERY informative website about timing belt replacement for the 5SFE. It took me a while to find it, as I found it in a thread from 2006. I think it will be very helpful to the many 5SFE owners out there. Thanks! :thumbup

::UPDATE::

I got around to uploading it onto my host. Let me know if you have any trouble or want other how-to's to be uploaded.

It doesn’t get clearer than this. Fantastic photos, straightforward instructions, and an outstanding write-up. Even better than the BGB.
