Thermostat to small? Leaks?

I bought a new thermostat online for my 89 S/C.

I installed it today, but it leaks from the thermostat housing

I’m certain I have the thermostat and rubber gasket in correct (I read the BGB), but looking at the new thermostat it appears smaller than the opening of the housing, would that mean the o-ring would not seal?

anyone recall from when they changed their thermostat out last if the thermostat fit more snug ?

Lol I’m an idiot,
I have the gasket but I thought it was an oring, and didn’t realize that it splits open to go around the thermostat
Was about to post that when I saw you figured it out! Also for good measure, I also put a little water/coolant save rtv on the inlet side just to be sure and help seal.

extra sealant typically won't do anything, the O-ring is thick enough and quite pliable. Only time the extra sealant has affect is next time you need to get in there, just more to clean up before you put in the new parts.

Glad you got it done! Don't forget to bleed the system properly. Enjoy the ride!

Most of the time I agree you don't need it. It really depends on the quality of the O-Ring and how close to oem spec it is. I've never had a problem with OEM. I've rebuilt quite a few customers 4AGE & 3S-GTE and it seems extra sealant was needed 2-3 in about 10 rebuilds, all of which were aftermarket and didn't really "compress" much when closing the housing.

Glad to hear everything good on yours OP.
