alright, so I've spent the last few hours searching over the site for information regarding building up a 5sfe to handle boost better without breaking the bank. here's what I've come up with, please correct any info I'm mistaken on.
For rods, I can use 3sgte rods, I was thinking the eagle H-beams as they seem to be the most cost effective, either that or using stock 3s rods and having them shot peened and they'll be good for 400 hp (which is well beyond my goals). I'll need to have my crank milled down to accept the rods, and then I'll use 3sgte rod bearings (any suggestions on a good brand of those?) also, using these rods will allow me to rev the engine higher, to say, 7000 RPM, beacuse of the thicker rod bolts.
for pistons, here's where I'm confused. I want to wind up with a compression ratio of 9.0:1 or possibly even 8.5:1. Since my engine has blown, and I suspect piston rings have gone out, I will probably need oversized. Can anybody recommend a good brand of forged pistons and a place to purchase them? I think I still use 5sfe pistons? no issues mating a 5sfe piston to a 3sgte rod?
other than that, I use 5sfe main bearings, right? then I want to use a metal headgasket. but I'm not sure which size I'll need to come up with the compression ratio I want. I think I remember reading that if you use a metal headgasket, you need to have the head resurfaced, and if you do that you need to use a slightly thicker headgasket. am I missing anything else for a bottom end rebuild? I've never rebuilt an engine, so this is new territory for me. oh, btw, I want this engine to still be able to pass smog if I remove all the turbo stuff and use the stock manifold and exhaust and all, I'm not sure if lowering the compression ratio would make my emissions rise at all or not.
