New to me 2001 Spyder

Hi all, I’m new here and a new owner of an 01 Spyder.

Long story short, I’ve had the car since Friday and check engine light came on last night. Now i understand this can mean many things - and I drove the car without incident - to the point that had the light not been on I’d have had no other indicator that anything was wrong.

I’m going to have it scanned to get the code, any guesses?

then of course go from there.

But I’m a little nervous. Some details about this car:

113k miles - new clutch - new AC - belts replaced 7k mi ago - car was only driven 7k miles since 2013. In great physical condition for a 24 yr old car. Appears to still have pre-cats intact.

Anyway, I guess I’m here hoping to hear “I’m sure it’s fine you made a great purchase” 😂 I’ve always wanted one of these and it is a joy to drive.

Find out what code(s) there are. Probably just a sensor or emissions related thing. Serious issues like high oil consumption / pre-cat failure usually don't throw a code till its pretty far gone.

Thanks my neighbor pulled the code and it was emissions related, you were right. I know to check the oil fairly often. As far as the precat, are there “warning signs” that things are amiss?

You can remove the O2 sensors to inspect the top of the catalyst matrix. There should be some pictures online or maybe here somewhere showing a good matrix and ones that are degrading.
