I just recently bought an MR2 and it looks as if there needs to be a ring around the shift boot so the shift boot can attach to it, but it's not on my car. Here's a pic: http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/DR+PH1L/

Yes, there a plastic rectangle with rounded corners that the shoft boot is glued to.
That plastic part snaps into the surround.
