Hey all,

I have a question regarding the final numbers of our MK2's VINs.
I'm familiar with what all of the other numbers/letters represent.

I'm wondering if the final numbers represent your cars production number?
Is it the overall production number for all mk2's or is it in reference to the year, engine type, country, ect.?

From what you say, I would think that it relates to a production number. Year, engine type, etc, for any given model, are already defined earlier in the VIN code.

The part that I still find unclear is - does that production number mean it is the "X" number produced for it's engine type, country, or in general?

My logic says that whatever parameters are spelled out in the VIN (yr, model, engine, country made, etc), the following production number would be number made, under those specifications. Now, do they always start at zero? No clue here...

Based on some research I have done using chassis numbers and apparent numbers built it normally means the number built in general. However the chassis numbers run out at about 114,000 units where I hear there are mean to be 138,000ish based on paint code numbers. The odd thing is the 114,000 chassis code ends when production ends so there must be some numbers early on that didn't fit within the typical chassis code of SW20-0000000. This differs to the VIN code setout but the last numbers in the VIN code are normally the last numbers on chassis code.

Not sure if this was mentioned directly, but the chassis codes (last 7 digits), of all cars sold in a particular market do not run consecutively. For example, the first 6000 or so chassis codes may all have been used for JDM production cars since MK2s were sold there beginning in '89. Then perhaps 6000-8000 were used for European bound cars, 8000-10000 for USDM/Canadian cars, 10000-10500 for Australian/NZ cars, etc.

This is just a hypothetical example. It would be interesting to know the exact distribution of chassis codes. Don't know that Toyota ever made that info available. A company like Porsche has records of all cars ever made and what market they went to.

The sw20 (turbo) and sw21 (n/a) have seperate chassis number listings.
SW20 is the model code. SW20, SW21, SW22 and SW23 are VIN codes. They are different. Every single MK2 has SW20 as the model code but different markets got different VINs. So below you will note that even the USDM cars, regardless of type have SW20 in the Frame Number.

Unfortunately that hypothetical example is not true. As the chassis number increased the markets were random.See examples below.
This is the first available chassis code for the SW20 on this website. Although I do have parts on my car from a car with chassis number SW20-0000089.

It is for the Japan market, as is 113 and 114.
A few more down the line, this is for the European market.

A few more and you get to the first US market car. Before that there were a few more European market and the first Japanese turbo model.

As you can see in the the data, this USDM model was built in 1990. Model year vs production year.

Also if you note, the JDM cars do not have the same VIN codes as the Euro and US because they were not exported from the country of origin. There is no JT1/JT2. This makes sense as J means Japan and T is Toyota.
