this is a post from the old board... it needs to be here also... i'll give people credit for posts by using "quotes"

Turbo FAQ? before you ask about a TURBO look here

If you have some good turbo specific links feel free to post them, keep it simple though, just a URL and what the link pertains to? also refrain from posting your siggy as it clutters things up quick?

Also I will be nixing the turbo info/non link posts after a day or so after something?s
been answered/asked

this is the manual from the original HKS turbo kit http://evilallianceracing.com/ipw-web/gallery/album186

carl crawfords copy of the HKS turbo kit all yours for a price http://www.board.mr2faq.com/showthread.php?threadid=139198&highlight=HKS very high quality, but the only place i know where you can find a quality pre-made manifold for the 4agte project

www.4agte.com great turbo project by somone the belives in the DIY mentality

turbocharger calculators http://www.turbofast.com.au/javacalc.html

lots of info on picking the turbo http://www.dune-buggy.com/turbo/turbo.htm

how turbos work via howstuffworks.com... great info to learn some of the basics... read this before bothering to buy the book maximum boost http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm

www.homemadeturbo.com a lot of Honda guys that are into low budget turbo systems, just my kinda guys, the board is full of good and bad info be carful what you belive but it?s worth becoming a member? and as always read the FAQ?s before you ask questions :)

I've constructed an Excel spreadsheet listing information on picking the right turbo for your application.
You can download it here.
If you don't have Excel I've converted them to jpegs.

It is basically divided up into three categories (3 different sheets) with information on aftermarket turbos to junkyard turbos. The categories are:
1. Fast Response Turbos
2. Maximum Street Performance Turbos
3. Full Race Turbos

It has information compiled and published by Sport Compact Car magazine.
Here's a description of the categories:

Fast Response Turbos
These turbos are small and quick spooling. They begin building boost at about 1500 to 2000 rpm and are working hard by 2500 to 3500 rpm. These characteristics make them best suited for street, low-boost applications (7-16psi) or competition in motorsports events where quick response is preferred more than sheer power, like autocross or rally cars.

Maximum Steet Performance Turbos
For these applications, the idea is to get the most power possible out of a streetable combination. These turbos will have a boost onset at about 2500 rpm and will be rocking at 3500 to 4500 rpm. Although these turbos might seem laggy, the amount of pwer they're capable of producing will be worth the wait for the die-hard power junkie

Full Race Turbos
Most of these turbos are for creating big power numbers. By "full race" we're talking about turbos tuned with drag racing in mind. Most of these turbos will have a boost onset around 3500 to 4500 rpm and won't start rocking until more than 5500 rpm, making them unpleasant for street use and hard to deal with in road races.

As the original owner of a 1987 Toyota MR-2 that I myself installed an original HKS turbo kit on I can say that the benifits of a turbo on the 4AGE are great, but getting a good working system can be difficult.

I know that Carl Crawford is making some exhaust manifolds and down pipes...
And if anyone is interested I've used a few different turbos on my car and the T-25/T-28 family is best suited to performance an installation on the MR-2...

I decided to do something I should've done right away- I bought some large corks at Lowes to fit into the ports, screwed an air fitting into one of them, and did a pressure test on the manifold.

Big leaks!! I'm going to fix them tomorrow morning.

Out of risk of embarassment I decided to share this advise so others can learn from my mistake.

Frankly, I'm shocked at how much power I was making, despite the leaks.. Should be interesting when I get things back together.

njector thread... calculator and ID info

injector info from old board (thanks kirk)

The final word on fuel injectors

Since there's been questions (and some confusion) lately on which injectors will fit what I thought I'd post some links to fuel injector data:

"do i need high or low impendence injectors?"

for north american models...

'85-87 NA cars got low ID
'88-89 SC cars got low ID
'88-89 NA cas got HIGH ID

in theory you can use high ID injectors on a car made for low ID although not yet proven (i will test this once my car runs again)

you however CAN NOT run low ID injectors on a high ID system... it will burn out the driver and could cause a fire (know people who have seen aftermarket EMS's literaly burst into flames from improper injector ID settings)

mark
(recent findings) you can run high ID injectors... you need to bypass the stock resistor pack and no soldering the injector wires to the harness.

how much money are people giving for a turbo kit? I think it would be a great DIY project but how pricey is a turbo kit? I've heard that you dont need to mess with the internals if you run only 5 pounds of boost and that is fine with me, good street use. I've done some basic searching for turbo kits with zero luck, do you guys know where a turbo kit is available and is affordable?
