OK, so here's my problem: There's a strange chatter coming from my engine bay and I have no idea what's causing it. It is significantly louder when cold, compared to noise levels at operating temp. The sound completely goes away when I step on the clutch and I get the noise no matter what gear I am in, including neutral.

I thought maybe it was the clutch release bearing, but from my experience, a bad bearing would make noise while the clutch is being pressed down and not the opposite (which is what I am getting). I haven't ruled it out, but it seems unlikely.

All my syncros are fine... I have no trouble shifting in and out of gears and they never grind.

The clutch itself is holding fine. I don't think it has ever been repalced (140,000 mi) but its not slipping at all.

I was thinking about changing my gear oil, with hopes it might help things out a bit, but haven't done so yet.

Does anyone out there have any ideas/suggestions?
