It does appear that it will come under $20,000. The fact that the FRS ended p being as expensive as it is is why they developed this car. The wanted something in the sub $20k range. Miatas are more in the FRS and up range. I do like the new Miatas. Nice looking cars.

The only thing I would like about this model is maybe Toyota would let go of the "must be cheap" demand on the FRS, and actually give it a decent motor. They screwed up the Spyder so badly and it was such a simple mistake...simply add $5k to the price tag, giving it a 190 hp 2zz, C60 6spd and a factory hardtop here in the US. It would have taken off. Instead they kept it cheap and it failed. They're going down the same road with the FRS. Sad to watch.

(PS the SFR is perhaps the ugliest Toyota product I've ever seen. Front AND back. Maybe thats what the acronym stands for: S*$t Front + Rear. I truly like the Prius more :bleh:)

The styling reminds me somewhat of a 2000GT. I think it's ugly, but I think with some refinements and adjustments they could make it an attractive car that looks like a modern 2000GT. 2200lbs is totally doable as well if you go with a 2-seater and modern chassis design. price, who knows. Depends on how many off the shelf parts they use I assume.

there is no way you could say the FRS is failing, they are selling very well.

but I agree the sales arent going to have legs unless they offer high performance packages.

Perhaps...I'm not calling it a failure from the factory sales point of view, I'm considering what people think AFTER they get one, and what the resale and enthusiast opinion is. Lots of motor problems, non-toyota-standard quality/reliability, and every person I know who has purchased one has subsequently sold it. I almost bought a new one myself and skipped it after a very pathetic dealer experience, and now I'm glad.

Honestly I'm eyeing the chassis for a 2JZ swap in few years :biggrin: Right now MMR Auction values are around $13k-$14k for a 30k-50k mile example. That is less than half what they were going for on the lot. Very a-typical for Toyota (the same Tundra has 80-85% resale value). I'm excited for when we can pick them up with blown motors for $7k hehehe ;)

I think you have it wrong. It looks more like a Toyota S800.

The S800 was the 1st thing in my mind after seeing the SFR. It is kinda growing on me though. Yeah it only has a 130hp 1.5 in it, but I would think the aftermarket support would be decent for this car. A bolt on turbo kit shouldn't be too hard. 200 turbocharged hp in this lil thing would be a blast.

See, Toyota could have delivered the Spider with the 2ZZ/6spd for the same money. If it were to come with a hardtop they should have just made it a coupe to begin with. If they could deliver the Spider as light as it was as a drop top, imagine if it would have been a coupe. Picture 2100lbs with a 2ZZ/6spd in the back.

Not sure if you've tuned a modern day toyota, but the ECUs do not take kindly to boost. The only reason the FRS can be boosted with a bolt-on is they run a Subaru ECU. Toyotas are encrypted and you have to wire in dual ECUs to keep the car running. Its a nightmare and expensive. Its the reason you don't see boosted IS350/ISF/RCFs without a motorswap (usually to a 2jz).

Picture 2100lbs with a 2ZZ/6spd in the back.
LOL, thanks for the shameless plug opportunity: I don't have to try too hard to picture it, a hardtop at 1800lbs with a 2zz/6spd stares back at me every morning..and its for sale ;)

FS: 2000 2ZZ 6spd Racecar: Caged, Hardtop, AEM/PPE/MWR/Avanti/Sparco 1800lbs 200+ hp

Screamin, I had forgotten about Toyota's pita ECUs. I did know about the Subaru ecu with the FRS though. I still think this new lil car is kinda cool.

That sounds less than equal to the sum of parts. Replace a low profile aluminum boxer with a high profile inline 6 that likely won't clear the steering rack or fit in the bay? Balance and low center of mass are the point of the FRS. Handling is not what FRS owners complain about and this swap (if it were even mechanically feasible) would certainly ruin that.

:) I know handling and appreciate it so much I even accept and love the MRS haha. If I ever did build the 2jz FRS it wouldn't be for handling...more like raw power in a straight line, but with a toyota chassis. We'll see! ;)

The 2JZGTTE has been swapped into FRS drift cars. The steering rack does get changed. I don't remember all the details. Watched a youtube video on one.

After weeks of annoyance from this ugly S-FR on the front page of MR2OC, I decided to block it in my firewall. Relief!
