Must say I'm enthusiastic about the design.



Love the simple shape with minimal interruptions. I'd love to see this added to the Toyota production stable. We can only speculate what engine and performance could be. I'd likely lean to the FRS for performance, but actually prefer the cleaner style of this car.







It does seem to carry some of the original intentions of the MR2: Light, Affordable. Fun.

Still would prefer to see an MR application of the Toyota/Subaru 2 liter boxer.

I dont like it at all.

And in the end I doubt it will be really light or affordable.

I'm not too sure about the styling. Maybe it will look better in person.
The last thing I read about this car, pretty recently, said it will be front engine rwd with a 1.5 twincam 16 valve inline 4 cylinder. This will fill the sub $20,000 price range the FRS was initially supposed to fill. Will be smaller and lighter than the FRS. I think it is supposed to be slightly taller than the FRS but shorter, narrower, and definitely lighter.

It's uglier than the FR-S/BR-Z, which I mostly still don't like. And sounds even lower performance. Zero redeeming features except the rumoured price..

Ditch the back seats and make the trunk a more useful size. Re-style it to not be fugly, and give it a bit more power..

I'd rather buy an mx-5 (Miata) with a hardtop than be seen in that thing.

I'm reading the 1.5 and the 1.2 turbo. Certainly tilted toward budget on the cost vs performance spectrum. Similar to where the MR2 was originally positioned.

The style is not for everybody. I think modern cars are way too busy and complicated, with as many bisected shapes and interupted surfaces as possible. I'm starving for clean designs like this. It echos some classics. I see 240Z, Lotus Elite, and Jag E in there.

I read again today, 1.5 liter 130hp 4 cylinder. Approximately 2150lbs. Lighter than an AE86 with more power. Even with that power level, if the weight is true it should be pretty fun. I'm sure turbo kits would soon follow.

I always thought the frs should of been a simple cheap rwd car similar in simplicity and price as the Yaris.

Besides the silly front grille, I think it would look good in ANY color besides yellow! I'll take one in silver for $15,000, otherwise it's too expensive like the frs is compared to the competition.

EDIT: Just read the bidding starts at $18,000. This car has to stay under $20K in base-form to be feasible and to leave room for a high performance model that is still cheaper than fr-s.

The FRS was SUPPOSED to be cheaper than $20k but Toyota claimed engineering costs and delays ran the price up. I would imagine the SFR will have decent aftermarket support.

FRS was a new design on probably every component but door locks buttons, wheels, and brake calipers. It has a completely new, tech-heavy engine that I don't think has another application yet. They wanted a sports car even though they won't likely make much/anything from it.

SFR get's engines off the shelf that are produced by the... hundreds of thousands? Going to guess prices between a Yaris and Corolla. This reminds me of the AW11 and FX16, which seemed an answer to the question "what's the most fun we can offer for the least money".

I'm encouraged they are trying to get back in the business of fun cars.

Although the FRS/BRZ/GT86 is the only model to use that particular version of that engine, it is the base engine is the bread and butter engine for Subaru now. Most of the engine development cost is spread over many models. So it is basically an off the shelf engine, just suped up for that model.

I don't think I'm in their target market for this car, but I could consider it in the following two cases (if it had enough leg room... unlike some old miatas):
1) They offered a very stripped down version (to avoid impacting higher-end market segments) with much more power (enough to stay with a base corvette), for a modest amount more money.
2) They offered a 4wd version (while still being cheap). That would be a nice little winter car in the northeast, with our hills and often limited parking.
Those would seem to be two types of cars I don't see many factory-supported options for in the US (and maybe for good reason) -- smaller-than-mk2-mr2 but reasonably priced quick fun car, smaller-than-mk2-mr2 but practical 4wd car.

I like this car and would consider buying one if it sells here. The only problem I have with the design is the fake grill area. I don't like the current trend of giving cars artificially large front grills that extend over the bumper beam.

As for power levels, I could forgive this car for being slow whereas I cannot forgive the FRS based on its aggressive styling.

Ill believe their pricetag when I see it. They promised the FRS to be pretty much exactly what this thing is hyped to be, and they failed on all fronts. Its heavier than they wanted it, its bigger than they wanted it, its more expensive than they wanted it.

The JDM Subaru Legacy GT has the same engine turbo with 300hp

The main reason they are developing this new car is because the GT86 ended up like it did. I think the new car will use more off the shelf parts and also wont have so much hype to live up to. I think the development costs will be much lower with this new one.

I think they missed the mark with the FRS. It was "supposed" to be a spiritual successor to the AE86. That car was a totally usable car with a usable back seat. The FRS should have been less sleek with a more usable interior or just carry the Celica name.

I like everything about this S-FR except the front end. Why does such a tiny car need such a big mouth? And leave the lights round; not every car needs to be horribly angry!

If nothing else, at least Toyota is starting to brighten up the beige... we have the FR-S... the FT-1 is coming, and now this S-FR. Not bad...
