It is definitely a good insurance. The problem is oil shear...I used to run the stock pan with regular Castrol oil (stock pan) for two or three years before my stroker build with no major issues. (still oil starvation but the Castrol handled the bearing much better than my recent switch to Mobil 1) At national level you'll have longer and faster sweepers and that's where the Moroso will do its job.

Here is my 09 Finale video (stock pan), check out the oil pressure gauge (top left of the triple gauge pod) on right hand sweepers...(1 o'clock is about 60psi, 9 o'clock is about 15psi)

I think the pan is a must for hardcore autocross/track people.
Oh wow. I thought the stock pan is baffled and ready for that? Guess not? I will probably install some gauges in this car then. Thanks!

I see references on some sits to the Moroso "drag race" oil pan. There isn't more than one version is there?

Not that I am aware of. Now apparently Moroso's first design was not perfected, they did redesign them later on and there is only one single design for the 3s AFAIK.

Another thought on this subject: Has anyone measured how close the pickup sits to the bottom of the pan (either the stock pan or the Moroso one if its dfferent)? If its excessivly high it might be worth while to make a spacer to drop the pickup a little lower, get it submurged a little deeper in the oil.

I actually did this measurement before I bought the Moroso pan and came up with "less than 1/4"...(more like 1/8")... the pick up is not the issue. The lack of baffling in the stock pan is definitely the culprit.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to suggest that moving the pickup would be the only solution required, only that it might be one additional level of protection that could be added. However, if its already only 1/4" or less I don't think there are any gains to be made in that area.

Here is a dyno of a similarly equipped 2GR in a lotus elise. PS...I think I've worked the course while you were running at the DC Pro and that celica is a beast. Are you done racing it? It looked pretty competitive to me considering you were faster than the 240. Do you have any experience in an MR2?

OK, I finally got home from work and was able to watch the video of your oil pressure gauge. SCARY!! An oil pan is definitely on my list now.

I don't suppose you have any videos with the Moroso pan, just to "prove" that it works, or how well it works?

Am I seeing that right that you have added spherical bearings to the outer ends of the control arms? Whats the reasoning behind that? I assume you are building a ball joint replacement stud of some sort, otherwise you would have tons of weird movement with the two pivots.

That would be pretty interesting with the two pivot points...heh
You got it, I am working on a stud setup right now, very similar to my alltrac RCA pictured here:

Whether it's going to work with the MR2 spindle is the question. Will be testing as soon as possible...

As far as videos after the pan install, I don't really have any on youtube right now. I did however do a test afterwards and it was much better. The pressure still drops slightly in hard right hand corners but nothing like the stock pan.

I guess thats better than nothing eh? A shame it doesn't fix it completly, but considering how long your motor survived with no oil pressure, I guess a little pressure drop on occasion isn't as big of a deal as you might expect.

A dry sump will fix it 100%. heh But you are right, I don't think a little pressure drop will necessarily kill your engine. Like I mentioned before, I autocrossed a lot before without the pan and it was fine, or at least ok...I could definitely tell there was more wear than usual when I took the bearing out. Also, what about all those MR2's running in stock? They don't have any special pans. I think with proper oil level and good oil and oil changing habbits our cars will be fine. But it's always nice to have a little help preventing oil sloshing. :)

Interesting. I can see why you would do that on the AllTrac since the ball joint is upside down from the way the MR2 is setup. I guess on the MR2 you do gain adjustability from it as well.

Yes, it's just a matter of figuring out a way to mount the stud to the spindle and make it strong enough to withstand the forces.

As an updated, just got started on the last control arm last night, full suspension is planned to be done and installed within the next two weeks. Engine is coming along nicely too, just a matter of assembling everything. (clearances are done, rings are gapped)

Alex (and others with built strokers), what ring gaps are you running if I may ask? I am running 0.019 on the top and about .024 or so on the second ring... (86.5mm CP strokers)

Always full, I check the oil very often during autocrossing.
