I am measureing for shimless buckets and I am comming up with numbers that do not seem right. The sizes that I am comming up with to order shimless buckets are out of the "range" specified on RMR's web site. I will list my measurements below. I took the Shim and Bucket size plus the clearance now to get a total size. I then subtracted the Wanted Clearance and multiplied by 25.4 to get MM. That's right, right?

The size on a few are 5.969 and the biggest the shimless goes is 5.95.
Can someone see what I did wrong?

Also I contacted Ted Components and they have yet to return my e-mail? Anyone know what going on there? It's been almost a week.

The only thing I can see are some rather large current clearances. Buckets and shims are from .216-.220, yet clearance varies from .002-.030, and wanted total distance varies from .214-.235. I am just curious as to how it got that way. Is possibly something worn more than was noticed?

I took out all the buckets with shims still attached and got them all mixed up so I am not sure what valves they went with... Also I just installed new 1mm OS Ferrea Valves. That is my guess why?

You are going to have to put the buckets in with then cams back in and remeasure everything, this time marking the buckets and shims with the valve they were measured with. With out knowing what valves the buckets and shims went with, you're up a creek.

Also, check the specs on your cam lobes, I would not expect that they would have worn that badly, but stranger _____ has happened before.

By clearance you mean the valve lash? The intake should have a clearance, acording to the BGB, of 0.015" to 0.020". The exhaust should be 0.020" to 0.030". This is measured cold. Some of your intake clearances are way to small, again probably because of your new valves.

Just recheck all of your measurements and mark the valve those measurements go with.

When I origionally took the head apart I messed up where the "bucketshims" had been. That shouldn't matter though because I measured them with the new valves, and they were set up with the old valves.

I remeasured everything about 3 times.

The cams are new HKS 272 but will recheck the lobes.

The BGB calls it Valve Clearance... The Intake is 0.15-0.25mm (.006-.010") and Exhaust is 0.20-0.30mm (.008-.012"). The size you gave is in MM not inches, I measured everything in inches then converted to MM in the end.

On the drive home, I had a faint memory of this same problem before. I think the consensus then was that the valves should have been ordered with a longer valve stem. Even if you swapped buckets and shims around to even out your differences, your total distance from valve stem to cam is too much. I suspect it is in varying installed valve height.

So my valves are too short? But so many people use the same valves and no one has had this problem before?

Not necessarily. They may just need to be seated further into the head. Can you measure the installed height from the spring base of the head to the top of the stem to see if that is where the excess clearance is?

I will try to measure valve length tonight but I cannot find specifications for length of spring to top(installed Height)?

I don't know either, but if the ones with excessive clearance measure less height than the others, then most likely, that is the problem.

This is common when installing oversize valves... take the cylinder head back to teh machinist and ask them to cut the valve seats a bit more (a three angle job at the same time would be great)... a few thou should do the trick nicely... just work out the math...
