Hey guys quick question... I don't deal with the s54 transmission very much. Should the speedo gear mechanism spin freely while installed in the transmission? I noticed on the e153 transmission the speedo gear does not spin if you try to turn it by hand. But on my s54 the speedo gear spins freely by hand. Please let me know if this is normal? Thanks Mike!

The gear shouldn't spin when installed in the transmission. The housing can spin though if not bolted down.

Thanks guys! That's what I figured. I guess my next question is... is the speed pulse generator drive gear inside the trans a discontinued part???

According to the EPC, two were used on the MR2 s54:
199001-199003 33481-32010 $34
199003-199506 33481-32060 Discontinued

Notation for both is "N=25" (that's teeth, I think). I don't know if you could use the earlier one on a later diff.

[edit]
The one from the 92-96 Camry 4cyl is still available (33481-32070)
But it is a 27 tooth gear, so will make your speed read 8% too high, all else being equal.

Jim... I really appreciate your help! Thank you! So if worse comes to worse I have a speedometer that reads 8% high. I can deal with that. 🙂
