Actuallyl doing your own struts is pretty easy, a lot easier than it looks.
I did myself and I would say the 2 things you MUST have other than regular hand tools is a vice (or some other large thing to hold the struts stationary) and a spring compressor.

Here's a write up:


I did it myself. Only took 1 day, that was struts, springs, new boots, camber kit, brakes and rotors.

For the same job (struts, springs, camber kit and 4-wheel alignment) minus the brakes Les Schwab quoted me almost $1700 for everything, parts and labor.
I paid only $650 for the struts, springs, boots and camber kits. HUGE savings.
