Does anyone know how to tell the difference between an oem water pump and cheap aftermarket? I bought one of those ebay "OEM toyota water pumps" and would like to know it's toyota before I bolt it on my 3rd gen for failure...

The only thing I see on the pump are the numbers 9140-12 with a circled "A" after it. (right beside the gear)

It should say ASCO on it if it is oem supplier, and toyota on if it is dealer oem. Asco/Aisin makes them for toyota and also sells in the aftermarket to jobbers.
If it says gmb on it toss it and buy another one.

the pump has a dot of red paint, a circled "A" stamped in yellow, a "date calendar" with 96 in the middle and 9140-12 A. Does any of this sound like ASCO?

I bought it off ebay advertised as an oem pump... eep.

thanks guys-

Every toyota waterpump I have here is stock has Toyota and Aisin emprinted on it so I can rule out that is definetly not a toyota waterpump
