Hi,

My 75 year old father is a MR2 driver for over 34 years, after he sold his MK1 after 18 years he now owns and daily drives a green 2001 spider with brown soft-top and green hardtop.

The last two years there was the once and a while power steering failure, and a restart of the engine always solved the issue. Now it is a permanent issue, the pump does not work.

We checked the relay, there is 14V coming into the relay solenoid and it switches correctly. The 50A fuse is ok and the 7.5A fuse at the dashboard as well. The voltage between the poles that the relais switches is low, 0 to 1.5V as I believe it should be. When shortening them the pump does not work. The fluid level is a few mm below minimum, could it be that the pump quits working when the fluid is below the minimum?

What would be the next steps to do?

Kindest regards,
Bart, The Netherlands

Could just be that the pump motor is worn out. If you have power to the motor and it does not run, that is the obvious problem.

If you have to refurbish it, you may be able to turn the commutator on a lathe and replace the brushes.
