What's happening guys? I apoligize in advance for the questions I'm going to ask, I searched for some of the individual questions but I was hoping someone could give me some help with the following. . .

I've been looking for a project car to work on, S13, S14, Fd, and I realized I should just buy my friends 91' MR2 Turbo. It's been sitting in his driveway for a while at this point, and he'd sell it to me for very cheap, like <$4G's.

The body is in good shape, engine has seen better days. He's really good with cars, done a ton of swaps, but he has stayed away from this car mainly because his intentions were to just sell it to someone cheap while explaining the engine needed work.

So, the questions are pricing questions:

What are the prices I'd be looking at for:

-A strong USDM turbo engine
-A stong JDM turbo engine
-An LSD

And I'm assuming the engines usually come with the tranny.

If someone could give me some color I'd appreciate it as he wants to move the car soon. After buying the car I'll have about $10,000 to work with. I'd like to be able to do suspension, rims, engine, lsd for that price, but I'm clueless with these cars.

Thanks in advance :thumbup

Engine - $1000
Engine & Tranny - $1200-$1400
Engine & LSD Tranny - $1600-$1800
Aftermarket LSD - $800
LSD Tranny - $800

These are rough estimates but do some shopping cuz prices can vary greatly and shipping costs can be very different too.

Woah, you're telling me I can get an engine, tranny, and lsd for under $2000? Holy F! That is great! Can you refer me to site that has honest guys and decent engine prices?

Man, this is a much cheaper engine than the SR20's for 240sx's. :thumbup

Here is a list of decent people to go through. Most people like to go through Jarco. These links I post might only have rear clips, but you can even find rear clips with everything for 1800-2500 depending on LSD or not. Remember anything 93+ probably comes with an LSD. If its a 91-92, it definitely does NOT come with LSD as it was never an option.

I copied and pasted all the links and then when I've clicked on them, half of them are crap. Sorry. Doing some searching will find you some good info. Also, look in our parts for sale forum and there is alot of stuff that pops up on there, like engines and tranny's. Ah ha, I found what I was looking for. Click on this link and check out this thread, it should have everything you need.

Thanks man, this is good stuff along with the linked post. Question about the LSD from one of these clips/motors, do you think I'm better off NOT getting an LSD with a package and just buying a new one? Do the LSD's get tired in these cars, or is there a good chance they are still operating correctly?

Our cars use a viscous style LSD and is pretty much the crappiest kind made. Yes, they can get lazy over time, however the 50K-60K mile engines from Japan probably still have life left in them. What are you going to be doing? For drag racing or spirited driving, the stock LSD is probably sufficient. If you have the money, or do any serious road course/Auto-X I would recommend an aftermarket. Here's the problem though. The 91-92 are absolutely worthless because they came with single cone synchro's. Almost everybody by the time they hit 100K miles has problems getting into at least one gear. The 93 and newer, whether it had LSD or not came with dual cone synchro's and shifts so much smoother and better. It is worth the extra money for the synchro's, trust me. Ive owned a 91, 92, 93, and now a 94 and I don't ever want to shift with another 91-92 tranny.

I'm building this car as a weekend road machine but mainly for road racing/auto x. I'm familiar with VLSD's, and for that matter, the lack of longevity due mainly to the fluid breaking down.

Very interesting about the tranny, I've driven the car I'm buying (buying from a friend, 91') and it definitely was notchy.

I have a decent budget for the project so I want to do it right, I have to sort a few things out. The engine isn't right. . .I don't know what the story is, but it's maybe the head gasket, maybe for cracked hoses . . .

All said and done I want this car pushing between 250-300 rwhp, but at a reliable boost so I don't have problems with spirited 20 minutes sessions in HDPE's and so fourth.

93smg and others, do you think I should try to sort out the stock engine, getting a bigger turbo, later model year tranny, and lsd? Should I pull the engine, dump it in the east river and buy a rear clip from 93+?

Lastly, as I'm planning to build an all go, no show car, are stock 91T brakes adequate for 300 whp (I assume not??) with good pads and stainless lines? Or should I budget for a brake upgrade?
