So I drive a 91 mk2 with turbo and was hoping to get it on the track. What can I do to gain more speed? If I were to do an engine swap, what's the best option to gain more HP?

First things first. If you are still in the "hoping to get it on the track" stage then I can pretty much guarantee that however slow you think your car is, it is faster than you are, and faster than you think it is. Please don't take this as a personal offense, just know that a slow car driven well can be VERY quick on a race track. Get some seat time before you start trying to gain speed through mods.

Second, (and to re-state my first point), tires, suspension, and driving well will gain you more in terms of lap time than a little extra power. HP makes you faster on the straights. Gaining corner speed makes you faster EVERYWHERE, including the straight (corner exit speed feeds into straight line speed).

Last, if you really get into tracking the car, reliability should be a prime concern. Few things are more frustrating than having your track day (which probably cost several couple hundred dollars, maybe more depending on how far you had to travel) cut short by a mechanical failure. To that end, keeping a turbo car in one piece on the track can be a real challenge, especially when you start talking about increasing power. I have been down that road, and ultimately ended up ditching the turbo and going with the 2GR-FE v6. So, to answer your original question about engine swaps, that is the route I would recommend for a track car. It's *plenty* of power, super responsive and linear, and rock solid reliable.
