It's time to disclose my latest project, this car had a TRD supercharged 1MZ-FE in it until last week, but i saw mikeH's audi v8 mk2 and thought im having some of that! So here is my Mk1 with its freshly hung 340bhp AHC v8 with 6 speed trans...









Obviously it needs some major strengthening work, and i have a lot of small issues to sort, but its hung and i still have space for my seat.

Do the transaxle output flanges (where the CV's bolt on) line up with the rear wheel wells? If not, how much futhur back is the center of the flanges relative to the center of the wheel well?

Are you going to increase the wheelbase of the car?

The output flanges are in perfect alignment to the hub centre, so i will have straight axles.... also the inboard CV joints sit in the space before each suspension triangle with the shaft just missing the triangle by about 10mm.If i could have found a way to get past those damn triangles i could have hung the engine 4" further back as the trans end casing has a 4" gap to the back panel of the car, but the axle location has dictated the engine position.I could have used a mk2 subframe but for the effort i would only have gained 30mm or so and a lot more weight, that subframe is a lot heavier than mk1 triangles!

No need to increase the wheelbase, im 6ft and i fit with a bucket seat.Its pretty much my normal driving position.

Hey Bill, you could do this to a mk2 and fit in bud.... sorry i know i just said a swear word! :) Mk1 all the way for us oldies.

Seriously Paul, pretty ambitious project you have here. If anyone can pull it off I guess it'll be you. I'd be awfully tempted to do what had to be done to move that thing back a little (and I'm only 5'7"), but seeing as it's your build and I'm looking on from a comfortable chair thousands of miles away, I'd better shut up and let you handle the engineering. This is pretty exciting. Good luck!

Hey thanks, it's pretty much as far back as i can mount it... another 2" would have been great but this is where it needs to go.Just think about the weight distribution i have now :)

Did you think about a transfer case to move the engine back towards the rear more or using a 911 type system with the transmission mounted mid-ship, man that's going to be a monster...

I did think about other trans but they all needed an adapter plate and i wanted this swap to be A bolts to B with the minimum of fuss.... i've been down the adapter plate route before when i bolted a 1uz-fe to an E153 and it took a long time to sort the issues.

Gouky has told me that a subaru trans would be a good bet though, its 5" from bellhousing face to output flanges,thats less than my 01x.

The stock 91-92 subframe (crossmember) weighs 27 lbs. I don't think that is heavy considering all that it does. My custom subframe is a lot heavier. Mine is an actual subframe and not just a crossmember.

Fair enough but my point was its a lot heavier than the mk1 triangles which are very light... i can see why you have had to build your frame though.

Out of curiousity, what does the underside of a stock rear Mk1 look like?

WHat do the rear suspension and rear tie rods (toe rods) attach to on the chassis?

It looks a lot like the Mk2, actually... Imagine a mk2 crossmember that's actually two pieces. Each end of the crossmember is bolted to the unibody and there's nothing between them to connect them.

So what did you do with the Lexus powered one?
I abandoned that project, the car was too rusty and needed too much work.I still have the 1uz-fe here with its E153 adapter plate and modified flywheel, but it's just too damn big to use in an Mr2 without widening the frame or lengthening it.The audi v8 is a much more practical option.

dude, thats insane.... what about the structure of the car? love the engine btw.... but why didnt you make an adaptingplate to bolt an 3s tranny to it, than it could fit in the with of the car....

Yes, it was a joke. Paul is from the UK where cars are normally RHD, not continental Europe, where they are normally LHD.

The chassis will be strengthened and a tube frame added to both engine bay and cockpit.Im pretty sure it will brace up ok.

This v8 engine will quite happily fit transversely and an adapter plate for the E153 would not be too hard to make....however! and it's a big however... the right side axle will not pass the block,even if we remove the oil filter assembly and relocate that (easy enough) the shaft would then want to exit through the oil pump.So that would mean a dry sump system, modification to the block and also a custom shortened timing belt.In the end there are just too many issues in making it work transversely,although im pretty sure it can be done.
