Hi Porter, long time no word.

Did you get copies of the "crew" picture from VIR

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/VIR+crew.JPG.html

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/VIR+13.JPG.html

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/VIR+6.jpg.html?g2_navId=xa8a72e13

or a picture of what happened to the GAC BMW at Daytona in 2007

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/Daytona+wreck+2.jpg.html

Luckily it came back to life again looking like this in 2008 (run by Fountain Motorsports and posted for sale several times)

No, the rollcage installer was also going to do the floorpan mods for me. I will post pics when I have some from his work in-progress (I plan to stop by a few times during his effort). I have a set of sliders that I was hoping to use (but can't) if you want a good price.

No, but the only green Epoxy paint I could find for the undercarriage (to go with the aquamarine body color) is an olive green color like the use for aircraft and BMW primer (only this is glossy instead of flat).

My goal is not to paint any exterior surfaces since the car was re-painted just 6 months before I bought it.

Dropped off the car and seat at the rollcage shop last night. He says it will be done by early Arpil, but I told him no hurry and he was late with the GAC BMW cage so I fugure late April/early May is more likely. I expect at least one seat fitting session so I will take some pics them.

In the meantime I will be modifying some spare strut tubes that I bought here on the MOC board for Randy Noll type coilovers with Koni struts. I also just bought some spare front and rear lower arms and front hubs so I can be cleaning and podwdercoating those while the car is away also.

I love how all ur suspension pieces are always freshly powdercoated.

When do you expect to finish this project?

Are you running the roll cage through the back window to tie it into the rear strut towers?

Thanks JD

The three big expenses for this were going to be the car, the rollcage, all the lightweight wheels (I have been reminded that rain set doesn't have to light), the engine, and then the trailer. I'm trying to spread those out as much as possible and fill the gaps with smaller/cheaper work. I may go for cheaper early solutions (a used or crate motor, less than ideal trailer) just to get on track and backfill with the more expensive solutions later.

I'm hoping to finish thing by mid-summer, but may push it ot to the fall to spread those big expenses.

I check Racing Junk for their Road Racing cars and Towing section every Mon and I'm still contemplating Norm's rig, but that large expense is last on the list.

Forgot to answer JD's question about tubes thru the rear window. Yes, I am planning those. One of the earlier posts had pics of the window removal and I have left a cardboard template of it with the rollcage guy so he can add cut outs for the rollcage tubes. My friend (went with me to drop off the car in DE because the rollcage guy works out of the ERT BMW raceshop and he just moved up from an E36 M3 to an E46 M3) that does lots of "special" machining at his work for me said he can cut the Lexan window with a water jet once I get the final template to him. Should be much cleaner than jigsaw cutting. I also bought the Lexan in a 4' X 8' sheet so I can get him to cut several rear windows (probably with and w/o tube holes) if anyone else (besides Ken who I assume wants one) wants one.

Per Ken's PM request, I will be detailing the strut tube/coilover mods pretty closely while the car is getting caged.

I'll need one for rollcage v2.0 for mine... but that is a little ways off yet

Lexan Rear Window

Peter-
I would like to have one of the Lexan rear windows with the holes. My current cage config does not run back to the rear towers but I would like to add that at some point. In the meantime the holes will make nice vents!

Hope you project is coming along nicely.

Here goes the start of the strut mods. First a pic un-modified

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0001_3.JPG.html
http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0002_3.JPG.html

I used a 4.5" circular to cut off the OEM spring perches

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0004_3.JPG.html
http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0005_5.JPG.html
http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0006_4.JPG.html
http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0007_4.JPG.html
http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0008_3.JPG.html

Then changed to the grinder wheel to remove the leftover

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0009_4.JPG.html
http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0011_2.JPG.html

The weld ridge left over would work well for holding up the coilover sleeve

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0012_2.JPG.html
http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0013_2.JPG.html

but obviously it isn't in the right place.

The Konis I got from Randy Noll don't fit either strut tube

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0014_2.JPG.html

and obviously won't work with the sway bar link bracket in the stock location.

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0015_2.JPG.html

I also noticed these Konis have an adjustment knob on the bottom of the strut that won't work with the OEM strut tubes.

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/IMGA0016_3.JPG.html

This made me look back at some Randy Noll installed pics he sent me.

http://carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/PDoane/mkii+coilover+1.bmp.html

and you can see that he relocated the sway bar link bracket way down on the tube and cut a hole for the adjustment knob. This means there is no oil in the slight gap between strut and the inside of the tube for cooling/heat trasnfer.

Any thoughts on whether those kind of mods for coilover installation are IT legal? With the front sway bar link bracket so close to the end of the tube, I don't see any way to get a coilover sleeve on it without relocating it. Greg Amy has told me he feels struts and sway bars are "free" and therefore the Randy Noll mods are OK.

Now I know why Ground Control doesn't sell a coilover kit for MKIIs.

The rule reads:
"MacPherson strut equipped cars may substitute struts, and/or use alternate inserts. Spring seat ride height may be altered from stock. Remote reservior struts and/or inserts are prohibited. External adjustments of shock control shall be limited to two (2)."

sounds like we'd be substituting a modified stock housing and using alternate inserts which is allowed to me. The mounting points that are mentioned as "must remain as stock" with regards to the swaybar(s) only refer to the chassis and control arms.... a strut is not a control arm, right..?

relocating the mounting point for the swaybar was the one I had trouble with. After looking D.5.d.8 reads No other relocation or reinforcement of any suspension component or mounting point is permitted.

I can't see where another section over rides that statement.

The "Spring seat ride height may be altered from stock" is what is driving the sway bar mount relocation. If you can add sway bar mounts to cars that didn't have them before, how can altering the OEM sway bar mount on the strut be a bad thing.

The only rationale I can give for going with a shorter shock (and shortening the strut tube accordingly) was to get some/any wheel travel at min ride height.

lets say you bought a basic off-the-shelf KW coilover setup (which is allowed) instead - how can you be expected to use the stock swaybar mount on that? Why should using the stock tubes as a basis for a DIY Koni setup be treated differently?

this fancy strut I switched to uses a different mounting provision for my swaybar (does that include end-links as well?) and I'm allowed to modify both (strut and swaybar). If you wanted to be extra careful you could re-use the stock mount point, just cut and re-welded. - I'd like to think that would survive a protest.... or screw it, don't run any swaybars at all - you can remove them, just bump up the spring rates

the other side of "if it doesn't say you can, then you can't" is always "if you can, then you bloody well can..."

I didn't think running a an OTS coilover was allowed because it is a new strut, not just a different insert (the shock part of a strut) and adding the coilover sleeve to a modified spring perch.

If OTS coilovers are allowed, then that jives with Greg's "struts are free" statement.

bold/italics added for emphasis from 5.b.2 GCR pg 336

"MacPherson strut equipped cars may substitute struts, and/or use alternate inserts.
that seems to indicate to me that the housing may be replaced (maybe even replaced with one that happened to start life as stock ;) )

Must have been one of those Fast Tracks I missed while playing in Grand Am. I haven't heard back from Norm, but have convinved myself that they should be legal.

I say that to make sure that I'm reading it correctly as well, there are some differences between how NASA interprets some stuff and other clubs... so I did grow up a little bit differently...
