any ideas on this please comment

I'm a huge fan of heat transfer and aerodynamics in automotive (might be a seccondary effect of my proffesional background and gearhead passion) I'm building a turbocharged 4age on my 2, and I want to increase heat transfer on the engine to keep it cool. To achieve this I'm attaching some kind of ducts or wind deflectors made of aluminum on the bottom of the car to redirect the air to the engine, kind of creating a ramming effect on the engine and components. Im also adding a fan under the intercooler (blowing upwards to the engine lid) which will be between the intercooler and transmission. Of course I know that I'll be blowing some hot air into the intercooler, but there is no other way I've thought of unless I use a side scoop and close it with fiberglass or something and then redirect the flow into the intercooler by using a pipe or the same idea but enclosing one of the ducts from beneath the car. I don't think the second one would be practical because of the small amount of air through the inlet of the side scoop although I've tought on combining ideas. Anyways, if I do these tunnels I'll have to open up the engine lid (the NA one) by cutting the sheet metal on the outlets or maybe do some fiber glass lid like this one:



All this air will need to come out by taking advantage of the vacuum behind the rear window, helped by the rear widow visor which amplifies the low pressure on this zone. But this will certainly increase pressure over the engine lid (low pressure zone) and possibly somehow disrupt the circulating flow (vortex) affecting aerodynamics on the spoiler zone. I've been considering using the Plumley mod, but I'm concerned if this would help aerodynamics and downforce in my case. I know there's a strong vacuum effect next to the tail lights which pulls down the Plumley spoiler hence creating some downforce and added stability, but the air exiting the engine lid could neglect this effect because the vortex over the engine lid could be disrupted and somehow go towards the rear end of the car. I'm also thinking on adding a diffuser under the pipes to add more stability and downforce (just to avoid snap-oversteer and enhance grip) to the car but also taking into account the heat transfer in the exhaust by maybe adding some welded fins to cool it down. I might be exagerating because this will be a DD car and some track days. If anyone has some ideas please comment.

I've seen some 3D models around the web. Maybe we could contact the owners and use them for a deeper analysis.

With regards to your intercooler, a few people have and are roof mounting the intercoolers to avoid that problem of passing hot air from the engine bay through the cooler... Maybe a thought for u??

good success?

Specifically, how/where did the aluminum spoiler work well, on the track? Have you run on the track with no spoiler at all?

Here are some other wings that I have used on the track with good success.

Mounted on my MK1.22 5SFE 2.2 liter powered MK1 MR2 Endurance Race car.
Made from aluminum with a gurney flap. Rear visibility was limited as spoiler blocked the rear view. A clear Lexan version would be ideal.




real APR aluminum spoiler. I like the look of this bad boy. It goes out to the absolute max width of the car. It really worked well too. More testing is needed though.

KISS Keep It simple

Okay, I been reading this thread. Downforce seems to be contradicting to enhance aerodynamics.

I am also a proud member of the Ecomodder forum.

So, would relocating the rear wing/spoiler 4.5" towards the rear reduce aerodynamic drag?

Would altering the angles help any?

My only goal would be to increase MPG, would be happy with a 3% increase.

No joke. Changed the transaxle-dropped RPM's by 15%. Later will experiment a little with lean-burn. Want to alter the signal coming from the Oxygen sensor, and either alter or re-calibrate the AFM as well.

Cruising in a classic sports car is definitely cool.
Getting Prius style MPG at the same time: Priceless.

I really like that larger spoiler that Bill Strong has on his AW11 MR2 and have read a bit about the plumley(because I'd like to keep the same design spoiler, just raise it diagonally towards the rear away from the backend.) I am comfortable with the idea now that I have seen it discussed here in some length. Would it be easier to install a different spoiler or adapt the one I have? I don't see any spoilers that are low enough or keep the cars design intregity on any sites. Any help?
