I've got an s54 behind my 3vz. Looking to extend 5th gear a little for highway cruising. I knew there was info on this somewhere (part numbers and what transmission to steal gears, etc from) but I can't seem to find it. Can anyone hook me up with a link or let me know where to find this info?

Use an S51 gearset from a 4-cyl Solara/Camry.
+1

The S51 uses a 0.731 5th gear ratio versus the S54's 0.820 ratio.

The S51 can be found in any M/T 1990-2001 Camry or 1999-2001 Solara 4 cylinder. Gen 3 (1992-1996) Camrys have the updated synchros, as do the Gen 4/Gen 1 Camry/Solaras.

S51 / S54
1 3.538 / 3.285 (7.7% shorter)
2 1.960 / 1.960 (0%)
3 1.250 / 1.322 (5.8% longer)
4 0.945 / 1.022 (8.1% longer)
5 0.731 / 0.820 (12.1% longer)

Differential ratio: 3.944 / 4.176 (5.9% longer)

Drive ratios (ratio*differential ratio)

S51 / S54
1 13.95 / 13.72 (1.676% shorter)
2 7.73 / 8.18 (5.821% longer)
3 4.93 / 5.52 (11.967% longer)
4 3.73 / 4.27 (14.477% longer)
5 2.88 / 3.42 (18.750% longer)

Max speed in gears @ 6250rpm [6800rpm 3VZ] (225/50/16s):

S51 / S54
1 32 / 33 mph [35 / 35.5 mph]
2 58 / 55 mph [63 / 59 mph]
3 91 / 82 mph [99 / 88 mph]
4 121 / 105 mph [131 / 114 mph]
5 155 / 131 mph [168 / 143 mph] (drag limited)

Even with the 4.176 ratio and the 0.731 5th gear, you'll still have a 12.13% longer 5th gear over the S54.

0.731*4.176 = 3.05
