I apologize if this is the wrong thread as I am just now entering the community. However, I am on the hunt for a first generation Toyota mr2! Not only is it a dream car, but it’s the car I want to begin learning with as far as working on a car goes. I am wondering if this 1988 mr2 is worth the grab.
If this is not worth the grab then what conditions should be worth the grab for these kind of cars? Either way I will continue being patient until the right one arise!

the car runs when warm but has trouble starting i’m not sure why, could be electrical but it is also spitting fuel from one injector and out the exhaust

Another inquiry I have is should I keep my eye out on second gen base model mr2s.. so far I only feel that the turbo models catch my eye. But if the base models are just as good especially as a first learning experience I will make sure to look out.
I'd say if the mark 2s or turbo models is what you're looking for keep looking for one of those. They're newer cars with a lot more HP and better handling

I saw this car for sale from the PO about 7 months ago. I want to say it sold right away for around 2k or 1500. That owner couldn’t figure out what’s wrong with it either. It obviously needs to be sorted but I honestly wouldn’t pay 5k. I paid $5500 for an 86 that ran well with a rust free body and lots of goodys. I prefer the first generation because of the 80’s look but they handle great and are really fun to drive too. I’m starting to see more of these cars popping up for sale so patience is key for a good one.
Learning to work on cars by buying one with unknown issues is not a good plan. Start with one that is at least running well. A car as old as the Mk1 or MK2, even if in good running condition, is likely to need fixing of some non-critical system and plain old maintenance items. That's a better "baseline" to start from if you like these cars and are interested in learning to work on them - almost a requirement of ownership now.

A MK2 na is good choice as well, and are probably in the same price range as a MK1 in similar condition, possibly even less. They are bigger cars than the MK1, but still very small by today's standards. ABS was available on the MK2, though not many of the NA cars came with it. If you're really on the fence as to which one you'd like to get, you should try find nearby board members with each generation of MR2 that might let you ride and or test drive them, to see which you prefer.

I will be posting my mr2 really soon I will used Facebook marketplace.. I’m getting all the paperwork ready and repaired done to the car real soon
If you are still interested in the mk1, then look very carefully at the bottom. Make sure that you tap on it, to make sure that there is still metal past the undercoat. Sometimes the frame rusts from the inside out, and those cars are losers. For example, the frame rails can rust out underneath the rear trailing arm mounts. That is how both of my '86 cars died.
