Perhaps this is a silly question. But given the new Hagerty report on the value of 1st GEN sc's increased value,

does anyone have a clue how many sc's are around, daily driven, rarely driven, or garaged? The last report I had was 15,000 sold in 1988 and 1989 in all of North America including Canada. I imagine that most are scrap, especially those driven on salted roads. Mine is from Oregon and now in Florida, no salt and fairly pristine.

Does anyone know of any updates to these figures?

Just checked to Hagerty article...Looks like I need to talk to my insurance company. I have a 1988 SC with 127,000 miles that I just restored...

Don't see many on the roads but my 89 SC is still running and as I understand it they only imported 300 SCs in 89.

I have an '86 MR2 that is still in active service; it is driven all the time (except in winter when roads are wet or snow covered). The body is still perfect and still stock (except for the wheels). I am getting close to 100K miles. I am the original owner! How many people buy a car new and keep it for 33 years? Anyway, mine is still alive and doing well.

I had a pair of '86 MR2s. One had 300k and the other had 200k. They both died 3 years ago when the frames rusted from the inside out. On one of them, it wasn't visible until there was nothing left. Intact undercoating with nothing underneath it. Just a warning.

I guess there are quite a few still hanging around.... there is at least 1 on sale somewhere everytime i check CL..
I just repaint mine and stii drive it often..

I have a very rough '86 na that I am slowly attempting to restore. I rebuilt the engine in november/december and am currently working on patching all of the rust on the floor pans. It unfortunately looks like the frame at the front of the rocker panels is rusting on the inside fairly bad on both sides as well.

I bought this 1985 NA last summer from the original owner at 154K. Spending spare retirement time tiding it up. Fixed the wiper switch, replaced the light switch, new clutch MC, replaced shocks, nearly done with suspension bushings. replaced some interior 'fabric' that had tears. It's been a good project and am looking to new tires, licensing and some insurance. Will have about $2K into it when it's driving. What to insure it for?

This looks awesome. I love the silver. What a sweet car.

I still wish we had some idea of how many are on the road. I assume that my 88sc is somewhere in the maybe range of a 1,000 out the 15,000 sold in North America (US and Canada). The NA's and SC's are not broken out in the 15,000 figure.

There are two 88SC's in my garage. One running, one project in progress.

I have two 87s both are NA, one has 265k miles and the other has 184k, both have refreshed engines and they run and drive great. Both are almost completely stock and I like it that way.

Still drive my 1987 MR2

I am the original owner of my 1987 MR2. 140.000 miles (original) Its just starting to show some rust on the rear quarter panels. Still runs great and the body is straight. Leaks water like crazy from the windows when I wash it though!

The numbers I have for total 1st gens in 1988 is 8144 and in 1989, 2537 that were sent to US/Canada. No idea what percentage were SC.

As someone who has been keeping his eye open for a good SC for 15 years I can say they are few and far between and the premium on them is usually huge. That being said I can say it does appear ALL AW11's in good shape have gone up in value considerably in the last 3-4 years but they did take a dip when everyone had to have an 86. I remember when I got my first MR2 you could get a GTS 86 in really good shape for <$5000 and were looking at double that for a good AW11, even more for a SC (if you could find them. the one I really wanted at the time was $16k) For a few years you could pick up a decent AW for about $3k and a really good one for about $7k. 86's arent moving as much this year but most people are asking double what I think they are worth.

I suspect there are a great deal of people getting these in not so great shape and hording parts, overcharging for them and those who put effort into restoring the ones that still have good bones are just trying to get their investment back.

I've not seen a SC for sale in my area this year, there were 2 last year, the first one was 3 machines restored to one and the 2nd was a high mile that sold in a couple of days.

I am not surprised to see these going up in value as I too am guilty of having 2 machines (well 2.5 really) to make 1. if even every other mr2 is built like that it still cuts numbers by 1/3, then say that only 1/3 are SC. getting pretty thin.

I just this past weekend got a 1987 MR2 NA for $1000- it's got extensive but light rust, with 4 spots that require patch repairs (rear quarter panel, trunk lip and inside, rear bumper) and rod knock in the #4 cylinder, but otherwise it's in good shape. Hopefully it'll be running by next summer.
