Hi All!

I finally pulled the trigger and bought a '85 mr2 aw11 and so far it has been a blast!
It looks good, but has quiet some technical issues. At least the body is 100% rust free!

I hope I can find some answers to my questions, as I have quiet a few!

I already created my own licenseplate holder and it works quiet well:

The Issues the car currently has that I know of:
  • starts extremly bad when cold, and still bad when warm. But runns fine, once it is up to temp.
  • leaking some coolant on the front.
  • engine runs way too rich
  • 4th gear jumps out (all the others are fine) <- got a lot of question regarding the gearbox, I allready read through the discussion of there beeing a c50 and a c52 (or not) but to be honest I dont feel any smarter. And as i potentially need a new transmission/gearbox I have yet to find out which gearbox I need

I am sorry for any misspelling :p

- Nice jobs on the plateholders. Are they metal or 3d-printed? Can't really tell from the pictures. I love not drilling holes, so I really like this solutions.
-The coolant leak, well you'll just have to go and try and find it. You'll find a spot thats dirty, and it will be around there somewhere. Could be a million things, the hoses and metals are quite old by now.
-The engine running rich can also be a couple of things. Try cleaning the airflow sensor, check the sparkplugs and see if all vacuum lines are still, uhm, vacuuming.
- 4th gear jumpout is weird, usually it's 5th gear that jumps out. So 4th gear is probably just busted. You can replace it by both I believe (someone please confirm). The C52 transmission is the one that came in the MR2. If you take a C52, try taking one from 1987 and up. They fixed the 5th gear jumpout in these.

I hope this was somewhat helpfull

Hi Perre,

  • It's a 3D-printed part, for car parts I usually use PA-CF, its really strong and durable =)
  • will check the vacuum lines!
  • yeah I ve read about it and seems like noone else had an issue with 4th gear, only the 5th so I believe the gear is busted. The strange thing is, if I just let my hand on the gear knop, without any force, it will stay in, it is not pushing the gear out with force and also I can accelerate violently without any strange noise or issues, but when I raise my hand from the knob it will jump out, maybe there is a possibility there is just something wrong with a bearing of the shifter or something like that.
I was able to find some gearboxes over in the UK and they seem to all be C52, but have to look if i find one build > 1987!

That was quiet helpfull! Thanks!
Welcome, what part of Germany?
Had a friend stationed at Rammstein, I was fortunate enough to visit and explore your awesome country. And do some laps on The Ring.

currently living near Karlsruhe, really close to Hockenheimring but I was born and raised in the "Eifel" so really close to the Nürburgring, part of my Family even had a small racing team competing in the VLN (endurance race on the Nürburgring).

The picture looks like a typical American driveway. There’s a keep Cherokee and an AW11. Are you sure it’s Germany? JK.

That driveway is actually from the previous owner but I dont have better pictures yet!
The one with the new plate is my driveway =).

I allready have a question maybe someone can assist. The previous owner told me, for coolant he used distilled water for flushing but did not remember to then fill in coolant with antifreeze, so I ll have to do that soon as it gets rather cold here.

Is it really that hard to switch coolant for this car? could i just drain a bit on one spot and fill the expansian tank with antifreeze coolant? (Sorry for dumb questions, still new to cars as I usually work on old bikes that are all Air-Cooled)

Well, as for coolant flush, I have an SW20 and it’s kind of tricky for bleeding out the air bubbles. BUT it’s very simple to do if you take the time to follow the directions either from BGB (service manual) or a post on this forum.
I don’t use distilled water as coolant. There is ready-to-use coolant available at your local Das Autozone. We called it Autozone. I’m assuming in Germany it’s called Das Autozone.

yeah getting the air out was my biggest worry but I found a really nice youtube video that took a lot of my fear away! Probably gonna try and do it this weekend as I really dont want to risk the distilled water freezing! Now my biggest problem left is trying to find out if I can mount any C52 gearbox to my MR2.

I found this gearbox located in the UK which seems reasonable: Toyota Mr2 Mk1 gearbox | mr2mk1

If I can somehow find out, that this will be a fit.

I love how active this community is on such a niche car (At least in germany the mk1 and mk2 are rather rare).

Someone with knowledge of MKI will chime in with regard to the C52.
I’ve been driving MK II since 1994, this is my second one since then. I had an MKII non turbo from 1994 til 2018 when I obtained a turbo one. I sold the NA to a friend and I regretted selling it but I don’t have room for 2 MK II.
Sounds like you’re gonna get a lot head turns driving around in a rare car.
good luck!
Maybe someone can help me, but where would I post a question about the compability of the different gearboxes? Because I found a "C52 1 b '86" gearbox but am not sure if I can just use any of these gearboxes on my MR2
