93' NA Power windows and Door locks,. Well the key turns the tumbler and both interior and exterior handles operate and "feel" fine and I can hear the actuator engaging by using the key or the interior switch.
Problem is I think the actuator rod or it's retainer broke but how do I get the door open to take the door panel off and fix it. FWIW the passenger side is working fine but it's a bitch to climb across and it's the wife's car :surprise:

Probably the spring in the door mech. Sounds like the exact problem I had on my car and a few others have had it too.

Best way to figure it out is to take off the door card from the passenger side and study the lock mech and look at how the spring makes it work. Then gain access from the top where the window glass goes down on the drivers side and get it open that way. Then replace the spring. I used one I found at a hardware shop and modified it to suit.

Gotta start somewhere! I can't imagine this is the 1st time for this issue!
Were your cars equipped with power windows and door locks? i looked at a parts diagram and I don't see any springs .Seems the electro magnetic motor handles that job?

Well I managed to get the door open using a suggestion from a very old thread by turning the key towards the unlock position and maintaining a little extra pressure on it while pulling up and out on the exterior door handle. Got lucky,about 2 minutes:smile2:
I took the door panel off and the lock/latch assembly has a hard white plastic cover on it. See corrosion or dirty white grease on the rod ends. Visually the rods move via the handles as expected but I don't think the lock is disengaging properly with out that extra force i applied to get in.
So is the next step to remove the latch/lock assembly and put it on the bench to check the spring?
Are my symptoms still pointing to that little spring in the assembly?
Is the spring in the photo of the latch/lock part the one that you mentioned?

You nailed it! the spring was broken on one end and in plain sight. Now where on earth to get a spring that will work.
Been all over town both hardware and automotive. Waiting on a MSD Dist. Kit that has the springs for the weights that in the pic look stout enough and size wise strong possiblity.
Live in SoCal, lots of car enthusists but coming up short on this one. Online spring shops have some that appear like they'd work. Only one latch assembly and that one was on ebay at a Virginia salvage yard.
$100 bucks and off a 91', how many more cycles does that spring have left?
Order a bag of these but still looking and open to suggestions!!

I found a spring that was twice as long but similar spring tension, hooked one end on then hooked the other end onto the coil that made it work properly. So half the spring doesn't do anything. A real hack but real cheap and no issues with it.
I was thinking about that and it will happen if my next stop tomorrow doesn't pan out.
I just noted your in NZ! On my bucket list but at 62 I gotta get in gear.
I'll keep ya in the loop and also so the forum to get a more current thread on the issue for others in need.

Are MR2's popular in New Zealand and Australia?

Yeah. As you can't buy this part on it's own it seemed like the fastest fix.

Keep it on your list, I love this place. Although the only other place I have been to is Japan which is on another level.
Do keep us updated, always good to see a resolved thread with a decent answer.

MR2s are less and less common but there are still enough to have quite a few people owning them. We only have 4 million people here.
Most of ours a JDM imports but there are a few NZ new and Australian new cars floating around each country. Special versions like the Australian only Bathurst R are rare though.
