Hi
Anybody having experience from swapping gen 4 or 5 into earlier modells? What`s the difference?

Not much difference. The GEN5 ECU needs the immobilser code removed. The electronics are slightly different as are the injectors but really they are very similar engines.

GEN5 has an extra stud on the exhaust manifold so it doesn't warp and leak like most GEN4s. The late GEN4 from the last 3 months of production has the extra stud on the manifold too.

Hi

Do you know how to remove the immobiliser code? Will I get problems when the computer loose the automatic tranny; I will bolt on my manual 153?

Send the ECU to a place where they can do that. TCS motorsport are one, Wiregap and PRIME Driven are another although I am not sure who does the actual work.
It doesn't appear that there are any issues when not having the auto gearbox attached but most people seem to get the swaps done at a shop where they do all the work needed and know how to avoid anything if that's a thing. GEN4 has the same setup but I'm not aware of any issues.

Wire gap can do, if I buy their loom and give them my OEM loom (which I sold with the OEM engine) Prime driven send to Wire Gap. TCS can do for $130 so that will be my alternative.
Do you know where to get the bare connector between the ECU and the body?. It differs from gen 1-3 I, guess.

PS Should it be possible to run with a gen 4 ECU after checking/rearranging pin positions of course?

Yes you do need the OEM loom as there are a lot of parts needed to take from it and put into the GEN4 loom. I'm in the process of doing this myself and it's taken a long time just to figure it all out and I haven't even started to cut and swap things over.

I'm not sure if you can get the 2 fuse box harnesses plugs on their own. What engine did your car have?

I swapped the OEM engine and sold engine and engine loom several years ago so sending the loom to Wire Gap is no alternative. I have swapped mr2 gen1-3 several times and the engine loom has never been any problem so I still don`t understand why he (Doug Copeland) needs that.
My problem now before the engine arrives is the connection between the car and the ECU and the engine loom (in the fuse box and a connector close to the ECU if it is arranged the same way as gen1-3) due to unavailable connectors; I practically mean the plastic housing of the connectors.
I have several old looms, more or less cut so pins and wires are no problem. A rude method is to put a number of pins with wires into the missing gen 5 (obs not gen 4) and secure them with epoxy. Then you put the wire ends in standard aftermarket connectors. It will work, but not look so good.
The OEM engine (sold) was a N/A 3SGE. A 2 liter engine used in mr2, Celica and , I think, Carina (family car) popular here in Europe.

Ok so what is the car? I'm more familiar with JDM stuff which is closer to the European car you appear to have. Sorry, it wasn't made clear in any of your posts what car you had or what country you were in.

What engine is in the car right now? Or is it empty?
Doug needs the MR2 harness becasue it contains a lot of wires and plugs the GEN4/5 harness does not have. The Caldina harness has lots of bits in the body harness which you won't have. Plus all the plugs are very different at the ECU end. Once you see the GEN4/5 harness next to the GEN2/3 wiring from an MR2 you'll know why.
You need the 2 plugs in the fuse box, alternator wiring, AC wiring and the ECU itself so he can extract a plug from it to make it plug an play into the MR2 body harness. I'm sure he can make you a harness without it but it will cost you and more time for him find one from a European/JDM car. They are not the same as the USA cars.
What version 3SGE are you talking about? GEN2 or 3?

Ok, it is like this: I live in Sweden, but mr2 mk1 and 2 was never sold here by Toyota so I bought it in Germany. It is a 1999 modell which means a gen 3. Might have been a gen 4 when you look at the model year, but it has a distributor and not individual coils like gen 4 and 5.
I have wiring diagrams and an ECU pin out for gen 4 or 5 so I know that the ECU connectors are different The main problems will be connectors connecting the car (body) to the ECU (one or two), the engine loom, should be some in the fuse box and maybe some corresponding to the white one fixed externally to the ECU in gen1-3.
After a swap some years ago, it is a US 3sgte gen 2 in it today.
I am afraid that buying a loom from him without the OEM will be expensive. I have to pay him, freight, 25 % VAT (based on both list price and freight) and finally some % on all this. No bargain when I can do most of the job myself if I solve the "lack of connectors" problem.
I am not a newcomer to this type of work and have a lot of documentation.
