Has anyone ever used or heard of someone using this little 5" JL to swap out the stock woofer? http://www.crutchfield.com/p_136C5525CW/JL-Audio-C5-525cw.html I don't want to go crazy on a system but I do want better quality stuff in my car. My Focal speakers sound great but are lacking in the low frequency department and the rubber surround on my factory 5" sub is nonexistent.

I'm curious to how they sound. Let us know. But I will say I'm running tangbands and there not the loudest subs but they have a good sound to them and you can buy both of them for cheaper than you can buy that 1 JL.

Yes... This link has 1 in stock Especially if it's your only dedicated woofer, I would stick to quality stuff.
What you supply it with will make a substantial difference though.
I like JL... been running a JL 12" supplied by a 500w JL amp (<.05%THD) for quite some time.

I've been running 2, 12" JL Audio W6's for the past 4 years but I just sold them a few months ago because they wouldn't fit in either my MR2 or Tacoma and honestly, I've kind of grown out of the super loud, trunk rattling bass thing. I just want a nice, full, well rounded and perfectly balanced system in my 2. I'm hoping this 5" JL sounds good cause I'm really not in the mood to break out the fiberglass.

Ya but that 1 JL Audio sub is a JL Audio sub. I'm willing to bet that this little 5" JL will blow away anything else. JL's are the bombdotcom.
I think I'm gonna try out one of those $15, 5" Pyramid or Pyle subs for a little while though cause I'm currently having a custom exhaust (Apexi replica with Magnaflow muffler and polished, stainless tubing) and a CT28 turbo (that's right, CT28) built for me right now and I need to pay for all of it first. I know those Pyle, Pyramid, Boss, ect. sub's are junk but they should get me by for a while and if the end up sounding like crap I'm only out $15.
I tried a lot of things with the stock boxes and it always sucked. I ended up going with a JL 8w3v2 behind the passenger seat in a ShawnM box. I had two but it was too much bass for the little cabin.
I say yank the stock subs and boxes and put a proper sub in there in a proper box. Everything else is a waste of time.

I agree. Installed two tang bands in the factory boxes and I'm very pleased.
I know this is a really old thread but here goes.
I just put a cheap radio/usb player/bluetooth/handsfree in the 88sc. JVC KD-X350BTS. 50 watts x 4. It was on sale at Best Buy for $59 plus free installation. I like it. It sounds good and seldom listen to really loud music. Additionally, I put my 1500 iTunes songs on a 32gb USB drive and I now have access to everything I have at home. I can drive from Florida to Washington state and never listen to the same song twice!
So that's the setup and here is the question: The subwoofer under the seat is blown or perhaps just worn out after 31 years. I can hear it buzzing rather than producing good sound. All of the recommended speakers for that subwoofer that fits the stock box in this thread are no longer available. (I have looked at all the links.)

If the original is 4 ohm, this speaker will be driven at half the power from what I have read. Even at that it would 25 watts. The original wiring as far as I can tell has at least 4 wires that power two speakers going to the subwoofer. Does this sound right? And will the 8 ohm speaker work?
I do want to do anything but keep the car as stock as possible.

If the amp were blown the speaker would make no noise. It does produce sound and it sounds like a blown speaker. I have been putting in my own home audio systems for years including wiring speakers out over the pool with a second amp driven from the primary. I have speakers reconed because they are blown and you can hear it. Not to say you are wrong, but if the amp were blown, the speaker would make no noise.

If you're worried about weight, put 6.5"s in the doors and forget the sub. Properly amplified, they will provide MORE bass than the stock "sub". Otherwise, put one of these in:

To amplify it find something low profile like the alpine amp boosters and stick it behind your deck. You can yank both the sub and amp out in 30 minutes if/when you sell the car. While you're enjoying the car you'll have the right amount of clean, tight bass to fill that little cabin.
Above all, DON'T TRY TO MAKE DO WITH SMALL SPEAKERS WHICH ARE NOT DESIGNED TO BE SUBS.
And don't try to use the factory sub amp.

With all do respect [email protected], I do not think that the JL will not fit in the stock location under the seat. Further, I have a 1988 SC and would never consider cutting into the doors as the car has been garaged for the 21 years I have owned it. The interior of the car is pretty close to pristine. The car was not driven for about 10 years while garaged (circa November 2008) and was only put back on the road with new engine in late August of 2018. It has taken a bit (an understatement) to make it a daily driver again but I have done a lot of work on the car.
Additionally, I simply cannot justify a $250 subwoofer for a car that still needs some basic work; rotors, AC (works but the clutch is slipping), and a new alternator that hopefully will solve "the three lights of death".
I ordered the Dayton. Should be here Friday. I'll let you know how it goes. I am not expecting a 2019 new car sound system with 12-20 speakers! Just a bit of smooth sound so I can listen to Cream, Bob Marley, Diana Ross, Jimi Hendrix, Herb Alpert, Wild Cherry, well you get the idea. Lots of 80's disco and some my favorite musicians from around the world as well.

Even though this is a thread in the mk2 section, I did see your 88sc sig and I forgot that the mk1's have the subs under the seat. Just out of curiosity, do the mk1's have any room behind the seats?
It might be another knowledge gap on my end, but do you have to cut to put 6.5's in? On the mk2 we just use a spacer and speakers which are not especially deep (depth measurement to clear for lowering the side glass). I totally agree; I would never cut anything.

Hey [email protected], I was not aware that this was an MK2 thread. Mea culpa. I am so sorry. I have been out of the MR2 loop for a while. Back when the boards were not HTML based, we put together group buys for Spearco aftermarket intercoolers, Cusco pulleys, and my welded perch spring adapters to accept the 1989 rear sway bar for 88sc's. It has been a while.
My 88sc is on the road as a "grocery getter" and the occasional 400 mile round trip to my mom's house. The nearly 180,000 car has a new engine that has less than 2,000 miles on it and is a blast! I dropped the oversized Cusco pulley for stock.
Enough on my car.
This is about speakers.
I ordered the Dayton speaker. I will be pulling out the drivers side seat to determine what is left to do. The Autometer boost gauge is lacking light and I will address that issue at the same time.
Where is the appropriate place to post what I am asking? Only 15,000 MK1's, not distinguished by NA or SC, were sold in North America in 1988-1989. Most are in the junkyard.
When I googled anything about speakers in 85-89 MR2's only this thread came up. Is there a better place or thread? My car is 31 years old and I thought this was the best place to post. I hardly wanted to mess up a MK2 thread and I hope I did not.

I put some Polk MW5532's in my stock sub boxes. Definitely an improvement over the 25 year old stock speakers that were deteriorating, even though I think the stockers were 2 Ohm IIRC, while the Polks are 4 Ohm.
They have rubber surrounds, so they should probably last the life of the car.

Hey thanks. I have the Dayton 5.25 inch, 2.48 inches deep, with aluminum cone and rubber surround. It came today. I will tearing into this tomorrow. I hope this fits the stock MK1 subwoofer box.

Surprised no one is recommening the Tang Band 5/14 subwoofer that was a popular replacement years ago. i replaced my blown sub with this little guy and it wored out great. The only issue is: the sub it round, so you have to cut the edges to fit the "squareish" subwoofer slot in the sub box. I did it with a dremel tool and some metal cutting discs. Not too difficult.

a) did you have to do any modifications to make these work?
b) similar to a, did you have to change anything to make the 4ohm speaker work in something originally meant to use 2ohm?
