If air flows up through the engine compartment out the small vents in the engine lid when it's shut, then it would seem logical, to me, that having a bigger opening would allow more flow with less drag with the lid popped open.

I don't know what effect it would have, but I can tell you there's a reasonable pressure difference above and below the lid. On my 3sgte swapped 89SC, with no latch on the lid it would open at about 120km/h and flap up and down considerably. Presumably if it couldn't open there would be a small amount of lift being produced by the pressure acting on the underside of the lid.

yes i have that same issue on my 86. at 130-140kmh its at about a 50deg angle.
so yeha there will be a bit of lift, but i think the drag from the air under the car is more of an issue than the lid.
eventually i intend to put an undertray in there. whos knows i may even have a go at a diffuser
