You can't. You can however use e-153 internals. I had a transmission shop rebuild my e-51 using the gears from an e-153. Now I have double cone synchros and the parts for an e-153 are much cheaper. I used a 93+ trans and the LSD wouldn't fit in the e-51 case. Rumor has it the pre 93 one will.

So you can still get new gears, parts etc. for the e153? Any reason you used a 93+ trans vs ealier e153? Do you know if the e153 syncros will simply swap over to the e51 gears?

All I know is that two years ago, the trans shop quoted me $900 in parts alone to fix the e-51. I was able to score a 93+ e-153 trans with a hole in the case for $350. It still needed a couple of synchros replaced but it was way WAY cheaper. The trans shop was sourcing the parts so I don't know where they were getting them. I chose the 93+ because I had read that the gears would fit, which turned out to be true. I still don't know about the pre 93 LSD fitting but I want to try it one day. I don't know if the 93+ synchros fit on the e-51 gears, but I wouldn't think they would.

The e51 and e 153 (lsd and non lsd) all have the exact same gearing. If your gonna take it apart I would try and grab the 93+ tranny the gears will drop right in. But since you would have the gears out try and locate a 5speed v6 camry final gear. Instead of crusing @ 3500ish rpms u should cruis around 2500 irrc. V6 5speed camery is also the same gearing except the fiinal drive. That's exactly what imma due when I have to replace the gears.

What's the e153 gearing like? Did the sc axles fit without any issues or did you have to use the e153 stub shafts?
He didn't put the whole e153 (mk2 turbo) tranny into his mk1. He used the e51 (the mk1 sc tranny) and just swapped over internals.

I understand that we're talking internals here, I'm just unclear about whether he used the e51 diff, or an early e153 diff, or later e153 non-lsd...

Thanks for the info, I'm going to look into the camry final drive.

slightly off-topic, but will the E51 bellhousing swap on to the E153? I assume yes, but...

This is actually what I wanted to do, but because the 93+ LSD is a different size, and hence the area of the case for the LSD, this can't work. It *MAY* be possible using a pre 93 e-153. About the ring gear, I don't know which one was used in my trans.

So to bring back a very old thread, I need to rebuild my E51 trans on my 89 SC. So will the E153 synchros fit on the E51 gears or do I need to change the gears out from an E153? I want to use synchros from a 94/95 MR2 since I heard that they are much improved over earlier versions.

Does the use of the Camry FD hurt the acceleration a lot since it lowers rpm at higher speeds so much?

Does anyone know of any good transmission shops in Oregon/Washington that they know do good work?

So I'm guessing that rebuilding my E51 transmission from my 89 SC is best done using gears and synchros from a 93+ E153 from a 2nd Gen MR2. Is there a place that sells the gears, synchros, seals and anything else that would be needed? Is it better to look for a used E153 and gut it using the gears and other parts? Hard to tell what condition it would be in. I would like to find a rebuild kit with all new parts. I'm hoping that someone can help me. It seems amazing to me that it could be so hard to find these parts as there are still plenty of MR2's on the road. Help me keep my baby on the road and shifting smoothly!!!
