I have an engine sitting on the floor and I want to do a compression check before I install it in the car. It doesn't have any oil in it right now, but it did recently -- so It's not "dry". Okay to crank it over to do a compression check without filling it up with oil? I'm going to have to pull the oilpan again and hate to waste the oil, but don't want to hurt the engine.

I'm really not sure, but it wouldn't hurt to put a quart of oil in it. The pickup would grab even just a quart of oil. I say waste the 1.50 or $2 for peace of mine.

I agree. The engine will run without oil, it just isn't very good for it. I have run my truck without oil on accident for 1-2 minutes before I realised that it sounded "funny." 22r valves get f-ing loud under oil starvation.

Also the compression check won't be all that currect without some oil to aid in sealing the piston.
