Code 14, New Igniter and New Coil installed

i took my MR2 in to only get a cylinder compression reading. the car has an existing code 14 that i knew of, and i was under way (read: weekend mechanic) to diagnosing and fixing the cause...

well, the mechanic ran the engine codes, and installed a new Igniter and a new Coil (without my knowledge). My friend's dad, but still f-ing annoying, $520.00 later.

anyway, the ECU Code 14 came up again today...where should i check? New spark plugs, new spark plug wires, good distributor, (and thanks to Spanky) a $250. new igniter (3rd party brand), and a $85.00 new coil...all help and ideas are thanked for in advance. :thumbup

None of the items you listed to fix the code will get rid of it. They have no effect what so ever on that code or any code at that.

Code 14 is the ignition signal where there is no ignition firing (IGF) signal to the ECU 8-11 times in succession. The that need to be addressed/repaired or replaced are the 1.) igniter and ignition coil circut, 2.)igniter and ignition coil themselves, or 3.) the ECU. HTH helps some.

OK, the igniter and the ignition coil are both brand new. i'll be buying an ECU, unless someone can help me out near the West Palm Beach Area (i'll buy beer and lunch). Now, the car won't start. Turns over, but won't start. and still has the 14 CODE...

thanks again for any help.
Good ECU, still code 14, no start. now what?
He didn't say replace the igniter OR ignition coil.

Chances are they were still good.

He said: "1.) igniter and ignition coil circut"

sorry if this is a stupid question, but by circuit, you mean replace the wiring? how would i go about this, or is it just a full custom rewire of the ecu to the igniter/coil? thanks again.

somebody? i re-tested the igniter wiring tonight, and with the ignition on, no wire has a 12 volt reading...5 wires. BLACK, BLACK/RED STRIPE, BLACK/WHITE STRIPE, WHITE, AND WHITE/RED STRIPE. only the white/redstrips has power, it's reading 5 volts with the ignition on...

so, to sum up.

code 14, and the car (a 91 N/A) had occasional slight hesitation at highway speeds. mechanic installs new coil and new igniter. drove home, still hesitated. tried to drive week later, car does not turn over. still code 14. since the mechanic will just swap parts and charge hourly, f#ck him...

thanks in advance... :)
I have a stored code 14. I tested the coil and the primary coil has a resistence of 1 ohm, which is out of spec. What resistence does yours give?

BTW, the car is slow as hell and I'm wondering if this code 14 has something to do with it.
my miata had that same problem, you have to check fuses, I actually found that my lack of ignition fire was because of a blown EFI fuse. check fuses and realys for the fuel system becasue that also contols spark. Good Luck I wasted so much time and money over a five dollar fuse.

I just remember that a forgot to connect the coil wire after I swapped in another 5sfe. I couldn't get it to start until I found that disconnected wire. So that explains why I have a code 14 stored.

Good luck to the OP.
my problem ended up being no power going to the coil...i just have no idea why...i swapped out the ignition relay, and checked all fuses. i ended up running a new power line (with fuse) to the coil.

oh, well. it runs...that's all i wanted. thanks to all that helped, or added input... :)

Check for ground on the igniter holder , it gets it's ground from where it's mounted make sure the bolts are tight or a wire from the igniter holder to the negative terminal
