If one want to try and max out the mr2, what mods do i have to do?
At what speed is it safe?

Im most worried about the carbon fibre hood, it uses 2 hood lashes, are those just as safe as a regular steel hood with oem lash?
Is the force on top of the hood higher than on the underside anyway so as long as its bolted down it should not be a problem?

There is no force under the hood with an unmodified funk, the funk is more or less sealed.

Going 160mph in an MR2 is easy, I did it with ~325whp and it still had plenty left in it. I think it easily had 175mph+ in it with a long enough road.

The issue is stability ay high speed. On a smooth road the front end gets a little light but on a bumpy road it can get scary above ~130.

A proper alignment is a must, also want all the undercar plastics installed. Speed flaps are supposed to help as well. If you plan on running a standing mile or something where you will really be going all out for some time, then I would toss some extra weight in the funk as well if the front end gets a little light at speed. Bring some sandbags along.

Each car is different, some handle speed without a hitch, others don't care for it as much.

Lastly make sure you have tires rated for these speeds and don't do it on a street with other people around. Being stupid and hurting yourself is your problem. Being stupid and hurting someone else is NOT cool and will haunt you as long as you live.

i have the border carbon fiber hood, there are lots of gaps and it doesnt seal with the frunk rubber seal. i feel like the corners are lifting when drag racing, kinda like that old japanese video of that mr2 going down the drag strip and you see the hood moving. i would tape all around the edges/gaps like they do when they go for top speed at texas mile, it is pretty effective.

Ok heres a question expanding on the subject at hand....what do i need in order to get to 210 mph?
In practical terms, a built motor that can rev to at least 9k rpm's. 26" tall road race tires that can handle that speed and around 800whp+ I would guess.

Areo work, flat underbody, front splitter or a lot of weight up front to keep the front end down. All the basic areo mods ect. PERFECT alingment.

Combined with all the rest for a high speed runs, perfect conservative tune, all the coolers needed to keep things cool for that long ect.

All of that and some trial and error should net you around 210mph capable car. Pats alltrac which has worse areo then the MR2 and weighs more was able to hit 210mph in the standing mile with more or less those mods.

Read up on the safety requirements related to speed with the various sanctioning bodies. ECTA, SCTA, Texas Mile, LTA, etc....

As for power to go 210mph in an MR2. Should be a good bit less then 800whp. I have gone 193mph in the mile and 221mph at Bonneville in a 96 GMC Sonoma with 675whp. Also keep in mind that the altitude is about 5000ft at Bonneville and the 675whp number was in Tennessee at like 600ft.

If I had to guess, with the correct gearing, ride height, tires, etc.... 600whp should go 200mph in an MR2.

Very possible that 600whp could go 200 but I also know that going from 190 to 200 mph is very hard and from 200-210 is even harder so I used a number that I knew already completed that speed.

I know its easy to reach im just a bit scared what will happen to the ask sport hood at those speeds as it sees air under it from the radiator..dont know how much force the air will generate :) the rest should be fine, tires etc and if it happens it will ofcourse be in a secure place, air plane strip. :)

Edit; topic should have been what to watch out for at high speeds carwise

i say tape it up really good and go for it, let me know what tire/wheel diameter you used and what you maxed out at i may try after you.
Lol yeah, if it happens it will be on the first of september I think. A viper club will rent an air field and I think I was invited as a guest.

If the radiator has been modified to go up though the hood that is good from an aero standpoint, that should give you a lot of extra front end downforce. It could also put a lot of force on the hood as well. Taping it down real good should be enough though but just watch the hood closely as you get going and make sure nothing funny is happening. Got a stock hood you could use?

Its letting air through the hood but its not nearly as good as it should be, only border/ask sport style vent (small).
I do have a regular hood, good idea there :)
If thats going to be used i just have to do some temporary solution for the locking mechanism, i do have the lock but i have removed the wire completely to the cabin, so need to have it somewhere in the front.

Another thing i wonder about, should i keep the rear wing and diffuser on or off at high speed attempts? i guess it does make the car more steady but it also creates drag and slows me down.

If going for top speed I would remove the wing unless you have issues with stability. Could find a spare trunk lid and just swap them out if needed.

A lot of this is relative to the car and surface/conditions you will be running in.

For example my car was rock solid until about 130mph then the front end started getting a little light. Was not a problem until about 150mph in my car with a few bumps in the road, by 160 I was out of road anyways so I let off.

I know of another MR2 that was perfectly stable to 180mph with a stock body but better suspension then me. The suspension and alignment play a big role I think.

Other MR2's have stability issues as early as 125mph.

If all you are after is ultimate top speed, you want to get the car as low as possible, run an air dam up front to keep air out from under the car, don't run a vented hood as it will add drag, remove the rear wing, run skinny tires on all four corners with moon discs on the wheels, roof rails.... etc.
If I was running an MR2 at a land speed event I would probably put some rake into the ride height as well and add some ballast up front, probably a few hundred pound at least for bonneville.

what kinda tires are you 149+ MPH'ers running.. cause..

V 149 mph 240 km/h Sport Sedans, Coupes & Sports Cars
W 168 mph 270 km/h Exotic Sports Cars
Y 186 mph 300 km/h Exotic Sports Cars

When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.
