Well my car got into an accident last year and i decided to fix it myself with stock parts and using krylon + primer paint.

The results were not bad.. but i really wasnt proud about it, the hood fenders and the rest of the car where all different colors. I did manage to paint the sidemoldings last week and they came out pretty good.



So having this 4 day weekend i got to work.

Friday = Fitment day, boy you would not belive how hard it is to fit a fiberglass bumper, maybe its easier with bondo but man it took several hours

heres the prefitment, you can see the different colors of my last job



after SEVERAL hours i fit everything and made holes for the lights



Not having enough time to start priming, and it being to cold to start masking I decided to use glazing putty to fix some pitholes a crack in the popup light and some scracthes. I finished off with a 220, 400 wetsand

Day two primer + paint day

I got a late start to the day because it was really windy early on and it took me quite a bit longer to mask off. Those were bad, but not as bad as finding the correct primer and paints to use. It took me 3 tries but I was able to find the correct primer. I really despise the new type of nozzles on the new cans of spray paint, They have this weird blue tip that has a ridiculous amount of overspray. The other paint I chose was just too dark. Stick with Rustoleum Automobile Primer.


I had to remove the hood and lights so i could paint everything wihtout having to mask off more parts




Not the smoothest primer job, but considering the size of the pieces its not too bad.

I let everything dry and then DRY sanded everything with 600 grit paper.. make sure to clean it frequently.

Next was paint, pretty uneven on my first layers, but got better




I let the first coats dry and then with the use of a desk lamp I layed down the final coat. I highly recommend using a light ( or painting early ), I use the light to tell me exactly where the wetcoat of paint needs more paint, really helps put down a smooth layer.

Total cost so far, only 50 bucks



Tommorow I'm either going to wetsand 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 or simply spray a clearcoat. What do people recommend ?? ?

If I spray a clearcoat can i wetsand it ??

umm from what ive read it leaves the clear coat nicer if you can get rid of some orange peel first.

for clear coat you can only go as low as 1500, then 2000. then you need a polishing wheel and compound. which gets expensive.



basically its either wetsand from 800-2000 then hand polish

or go full out with the clear coat... which will increase costs

I was able to remove the middle and front side markers, the rear ones i had to mask my car and then paint from there.

I scuffed them up with some 400 grit sandpaper, then finished with 600 grit. Then I just primered them and then painted them with 2 coats of paint.

To reapply them I removed the old 3m tape and use 2 part epoxy to hold them on.


I got the border about a year ago from some guy in san diego...

Ill post closer pics tommorow when im done.. still undecided if i want to go with the clear coat or not.

So you have something missing in your posts. Do you like it? What do you think of your own 50 dollar paint job?

From the pictures, it looks good. But it could look like crap face to face.

So do you think?

Looks good. The only concern I would have is the durability of rattlecan paint is usually far below that of actual automotive paint.

Actually the quality is pretty good, the difference is aerosols are aerobolic and not catalzed so they tend to be brittle and chip and scratch really easy. They also are very thin so build is and issue. If you put plenty on you should be good for a year or 2.

paint cured kinda weird in the morning probably due to the dew that formed last night...( much more streaky than what i saw last night ) but from the feel of the paint it will be very smooth after wetsanding with 1500, 2000 then some polish.

here are the pics







Overall im really happy about the fitment. THe fitment to begin with was pretty bad ( off by like an inch on the left side, about half an inch on the right). THe paint job is actually smooth to the touch so its kinda weird that its streaky. BUt for 50 bucks im very happy

I really want to clearcoat it but the cost to do it properly would be about double the cost of just paint.

NExt up is polishing ( though its suppose to rain )

update well I wetsanded the car took forever first the good news :D





did 1000, 1500, then 2000..

Now the bad news

The wetsanding looks great when the car is wet, but after I let it dry four things became apparent

a) I will need to spend several hours resanding with 2000 grit
b) I oversanded the paint, now the paint is lighter ( since the primer is light) :(
c) polishing even 2000 grit scracthes is a B)*TCH
d) I should have definately gone the clearcoat way

heres a pic of the difference between a polished and non-polished area



THe problem im having is that I can polish small areas to a mirro like finish ( very very light swirl marks) but I cant do such large areas ( without overlapping = backtracking)

Might need help detailing the car

your problem is the 1000 is way too agressive. I would have only used 2000 in your situation. You didn't have enough build to be using that much grit. You are also using an areobolic not a catalized paint so you have to be gentle.

the problem was that 2000 grit and 1500 grit just werent doing anything to the paint

:(

thinking about it now, i should have stayed at 1500 or higher

well im done polishing, thankfully the polishing was able to get almost all the scracthes out. sadly ther are "lighter" areas due to too much paint being removed... but for 50 bucks im pretty happy with the results



interestingly enough the paint is smoother and shinier than my stock paint :p

time to polish the rest of the car next weekend ( after the rain)
