Mammoth effort cleaning the bolts..

All 160 of them!

As for tyres - been looking into that a bit and would appear that probably 245 35's ZR18 on the front and 285 30's ZR18 on the rear will see me nice..

Been trying to find an example of the possible stretch on these tyres - particularly the rears. The last thing i want to do is order 2 very expensive tyres to find they're not .... just so.. :th:

When i get to that stage Chris - most certainly. The shell currently sits out the back at work.... Seeing as we have a plasma cutter ... it would be rude not to take advantage of it before i brought it home!

Only real thing happened here is the wheels are built...

I got brand new 5.5" outer barrels from JDM Autohouse... :)

Hard to describe how pleased i am with these... :D





And fitted to my stock 98 car for some idea of width to make up...



Makes 12" Rears and 9" fronts. Have about 1/2" strut clearance on the rear (no spacer required).
Fronts not tried but will need a 30mm spacer i think, at least 20mm in order for the wheel to clear the monster Porsche calipers.....

I'll gladly throw the tape measure over it tonight for you. My kids are at their grandparents for the night so should have some free time; if not i will do it next time I'm out there.

As for Transverse....... hmmm .... it's a bit of a big beastie; not much smaller (if any) than the 1UZ.

Sure:
Step 1) cut the mr2 in half just behind the firewall
Step 2) build a whole new tube frame for the rear of the car....

Another way to clean small bolts is to mount them on a hand held power drill, and use brushes or steel wool, or emery boards to clean and polish them. Should be faster than the method you used.

My suggestion is Northstar + GM F40 trans. Fits MR2 mk2 without cutting the chassis. pound a couple of clearance dents into the left side unibody integrated "frame rail" of the MR2 to clear a couple of bumps on that side of the trans.

You do have to cut the MR2 crossmember, but not a lot.

Main issues are custom axles, jackshaft support, and flywheel adaptor. Trans bolts up to Northstar.

Small update time....

The company I have worked for for the past 20 years is moving to a larger property. We own our current place and will be looking to develop the site or lease it to somebody else. Come January we will move into our new building which I am managing and overseeing the refit of at present.....

This will leave our current building vacant..... Thankfully the boss has agreed for me to do the V8 chassis mods in there. Which means i will have plenty of space to work, 3 phase power, heat, good light etc!

On topic, with work commitments i have little time to get onto the cars; either my V6-SC or the V8. Though i did manage to pick up some bargain part-worn tyres and have them fitted..... I've selected 245/35/18's for the front and 295/30.18's for the rear. Both common sizes and both readily available in part worn. New, these would have cost me more than ?800; I paid ?50 for the fronts and ?42 for the rears!





Personally, i think i have the perfect fit. Stretch just right :)

I am a little perplexed why the wheels seem to be one of the first steps in the V8 swap? Is the washer fluid bottle second?

Not really, the V8 engine sitting in his garage is the first step, nothing wrong with collecting parts for the project and wheels are a big part of that, i am a little perplexed as to why you would bother posting that.

When i built my V8 Mr2 the first thing i did was buy my monster rims and modified my wheel arches to suit, my second mod was to fit a bigger washer fluid bottle.

Lol Paul!

In fact Andy, I had bought these wheel previously as a set of 8s and 9s for when the car was turbo powered. I fell out of love with that project (falling off the axle stands and smashing the front up didn't help) so chose to re-use with a difference.

As i plan on going full on wide arch with wheels over Porsche 997 turbo brakes, getting these married up to MR2 hubs and knowing where they fall relative to new arches is quite important TBH. The easiest way to protect a rim while trying to build custom brake carriers is to throw a tyre on it ... et voila!

As Paul said; I have the 4.3 V8, the Audi gearbox, Audi driveshafts, Audi flywheel, Link G4 Xtreme ECU, modified clocks all sat waiting to go. The main issue at present is my distinct lack of time.

PS - i have my washer fluid bottle sorted cheers :thumbup

As your going down the path of Porsche brakes and rims(by the look of it), have you considered using Porsche hubs? Porsche run strut at the front which is an easy fix, with a multi link rear assembly on the rear which would be as challenging as a V8 conversion but will provide a vastly better handling SW20. At least with this conversion a new subframe can be made to accomdate both V8 and decent suspension geometry.
You can also avoid making new brackets and rotor hubs to suit the overweight SW20 hubs, avoid messing around with the whole roll centre/bump steer PITA experienced with SW20's too. All this can cost as much as a Porsche conversion.
You may as well throw the Porsche rack into the car too for pretty clear reasoning.

If I was to build another SW20, its certainly the way I would go no matter what drive train I was running. Porsche suspension/brakes/steering/widebody.

Do you have people helping with the project? Its a lot for one person to achieve in a reasonable timeframe. At least to have someone, and engineer or the likes to take measurements to draw up linkages, adaptors, a rear subframe etc, so it can be passed on to a machinist or lazer cutter to provide parts can really help getting some more momentum with the project. It can also allow some feedback from everyone out here who want to see this thing up and running.

Just to give you some idea of what i walk out of my office and see every day B24.....



So i think i have the engineering side covered... Especially as in my spare time i choose to draw stuff like this......



Which is the Scion TRD/Vortech SC fitted to my 3VZ ... So i have the design for CNC machining covered also.

Coincidentally, the photo above is the shop i will be making/building the chassis in.

As I am now (and have been for many years) a Manager who occasionally likes to get his hands dirty, with a project like this i am pleased to say I've had no end of offers of help from lads on the shop floor. We have no CNC capability in house but direct access to a laser cutter and we certainly know how to fabricate stuff.!! :)

To be honest, i will be using as much of the SW20 as i can. We have a testing authority over here called BIVA and, for cars like this, they're marked on a points system. Using as much of the original chassis/suspension will score me additional points and hopefully keep my car off a Q-plate...
