yeah, i built that car.

that's a 5MT from a 1993(ish) subaru legacy.

but there are all kinds of transmissions that are like that across porsche and audi's line.

the 5mt in 91-93 was available in FWD, i used one of those boxes so there was no rear output or center differential.

I've been mulling this one over for a while now. You can use the awd transmissions with the lockout spool as well as the FWD one. I'm not sure what the strength difference would be between the two, there is sure to be a serious weight difference. I'm thinking that an EJ in an mk1 with the right transmission and body modifications could be a serious little track monster. Alas, I have no mk1 to start cutting... lol

Someone really needs to do this though, I'm waiting on the TB guys lol. Check out this thread for midrear boxer work:

axles can be swept forward slightly without issue, if you use a custom crossmember and ditch the trunk you can get more space.

That was always my concern with pushing the trans reward that much. To me it seems that if the angle is any greater then maybe 5~7? of constant angle would cause the boots to be extremely short lived and also the joints themselves to have a pretty short life.

Yeah, I know that many CV's can take upwards of 45?+ but they aren't intended to do that in a "constant" condition. Those axle look to be at about roughly a 15?.

the joints will heat up more and they will have a reduced life span but this is done all the time by OEMs, just in the vertical plane instead. think of the stock rav4 and highlander, they are driving the front axle constantly and they have similar angles up front.

also, i have a similar setup in my 2ar-fe MKI (sorry, not the best picture to demonstrate it, but the motor is out of the car right now so i cannot take a better one):


this car has done about 7k miles of endurance racing at a similar angle with no issues at all.
