1991 Build Thread

Sup guys, I recently picked up this 1991 SW20. I have pretty big plans for it to which I'd like to document somewhere. I've already started working on it at the time of posting this so this thread will begin during my engine bay work. The plans for this car: 2GR swap with an engine bay shave (hah), wire tuck, and then eventually repaint, wheels, that easy stuff.

The goal for this car is to be a "GT" sort of car that I can pretty much do whatever with while being comfortable. For example one day I can hit up the track for some fun, visit a car show, win a trophy, and head home with a long drive. All while being comfy and retaining my sense of hearing, should be easy to do right? :p

Here's what the car looked like at the time of purchase. Good ol matte red.

Wait til you hear what you need to do to remove the tank itself.

How often do you have to fill coolant? It's two bolts and a screw.

Interior is back in, tach has been deconverted from the V6 signal 😭. The Interior is all back in. Filled up on both oils. This is the oil that came out of the 2AR, seems good to me.

Unfortunately, there has been a little roadblock with the AC lines. The high-pressure hose (not pictured here) works, but the low-pressure suction line I found off a 2006 Scion xB doesn't fit all too well. Plus, there's a lack of off-the-shelf fittings that would let this line be used. So, I have another line coming in that looks like it'll work with some tweaking. I've tested too many hoses, I'm starting to lose it.

Just a little bit more and it'll be back on the road. Then off to the ref!

Found a good solution now. Will be ordering fittings for this soon. Unfortunately with this setup, the small heatshield will needed to be trimmed a bit. Luckily its in an area thats just covering the firewall and not the fuel tank area. Pretty happy with this solution I found. Will post p/n's later

You can't paint the engine bay and not paint/powder coat the valve cover. BAR should fail you for that alone.

Yeah I'm planning a "beautification" phase after I get it BAR'd

I seem to remember you telling me you were going to go into BAR with a painted valve cover

It starts and idles! Will post idle video later but it does seem to be having trouble staying cool at idle. Hit 212F before I turned it off, must investigate

Cooling issue found. The main outlet of the head needed a bleed point as pointed out by the local R-152a enthusiast. Will need to find a cleaner solution for this.

Scion tC cat welded in. I'm not showing my MIG welds cause they are horrible but its in and it doesnt leak! Just need to get the AC lines crimped up and I can go out on a first drive.
