Anyone interested in volunteering for or just coming to spectate at the 2014 Empire State Performance Rally?
80 miles northwest of NYC off of Route 17 (soon to be I-86).

They moved the New England Forset Rally back one week to accomodate Ken Block (and Ford) who is running the Global Rally Cross event the week before at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
I think if you could get your car to handle more neutrally on tarmac (versus oversteering) it would go a long way to decreasing the abuse.
On gravel rallys (which encompass virtually every other domestic event) the oversteer could work to your favor in setting the car up for a corner.
I always rallyed FWD cars and there I had to left-foot brake to get the rear out to setup for the corners. Lead to some toasty hot (glowing) brakes.

Wow, that's impressive - you probably gained 50 seconds on him in about 8 miles!
Now if only you could keep it from breaking.
Next event is in Maine July 26-27- see link below.

OK, it's not an MR2, but it is intense - Ms Erika Deodata in her Subaru - clocked at 105mph taking a jump.

The winners were Greg Roumiantsev and Zsanett Martaine Fabian - on their first rally. Some were faster, but they crashed - often in spectacular fashion.
I worked one start and 4 finish controls, it was intense talking to the crews as they checked in, adrenaline pumping and brake rotors glowing cherry red.
Take a look at the in-car video of them on the last (SS12 - 18 miles) stage. Truly astonishing!
For those of you who think you can drive fast, learn from the up and coming young master!
(Oh, that's me at the finish control for a moment in the end.)

As great an event as it was Greg didn't fare so well in the AW11 MR2.
On the first stage - I was the stage captain - he took a jump and the drive shaft separated from the inner CV joint.
He managed to get that fixed for the second day but never made it to the end. I never got to see him drive it in anger .
Oh well, maybe next year.

The event is headquartered at the Rock Hill NY firehouse:
If you would like to volunteer plan on showing up on Friday to register.
I just got off the phone with the event chairperson and it looks like there is going to be a big turnout of spectators so plan on getting there early.
First car starts at 8:00 AM Saturday - and I'll be at the start of the first stage supervising.

80 miles from NYC - Tarmac Stage Rally - Empire State Performance Rally April 20-21
80 miles from NYC - Tarmac Stage Rally Race - Empire State Performance Rally Rock Hill NY April 20-21, 2013
I don't know how many of you guys are into Stage Rallying but we are putting on a NASA Rally Sport sanctioned Tarmac Stage Rally in Rock Hill NY.
A special treat at this event will be the AW11 MR2 of Greg McMahon.
For those off you unaware of just what these events are we basically take public roads, close them off to the public for a few hours at a time and race fully prepared rally cars down them at 1 minute intervals flat out.
This is the only rally in the USA that is run 100% on paved (aka tarmac) roads - the others are run on the more traditional gravel or dirt roads.
Each car has fully safety equipment, a driver and a co-driver (aka navigator).
Intersections are manned by the local fire police as well as various police departments.
The start of each stage (as well as other points on longer stages) have ambulances and rapid response EMS medical units and all points of the stage are in contact via 2-meter ham radio communications.
I have been involved in these events for quite a few years (decades actually) and at this event I am the chief stage captain as well as in charge of volunteer marshal assignments.
If this sounds like a good time (and dare I say - it is) I would like to encourage you to go to our website and register as a volunteer marshal - if you can't make it up for the full event then I would encourage you to come up and spectate.
Register at http://esprally.com/
A good time will be had by all!
