1991 NA Cruise control problem

Hi all.

Can someone with a healthy cruise control system post a picture of the cruise control regulator (preferably with the housing off)? I have a loose hanging connector off the pigtail coming from the regulator, and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like that for diagnosis or if it's possibly where the speed sensor connects.

I've attached a picture of the connector I'm talking about.

I'm trying to figure out if my ECU is out or if it's my regulator. My speedometer works fine and my cruise control light comes on, no blinking or anything, it just won't set. My strong suspicion is that its the regulator, I just don't wanna waste money on the part if not necessary.

I've tried using the Toyota big book to work it out but it's all a little over my head, and I don't think cruise control is covered in the volume I have (volume 1, without all the body/electric stuff).

Any other tips or experience with this issue is appreciated!

It looks like the antilock brake connector.

That would make sense since my car doesn't have ABS. Thanks.

So I’ve swapped in another actuator motor to no avail. I inspected the clutch and brake switches and they seem intact and in proper contact. Currently at a loss.

Does your speedometer work? If not, your cruise will not work due to lack of SPD signal from the speedometer.

Its also possible that the SPD signal output from the speedometer is causing your problem where the speedometer is working but the reed switch in it has gone bad.

The Factory service manual (assuming you have access to one which I'm sure you can find online) outlines diagnostic test procedures.

Ok I didn’t realize that the speedo could be working but not be sending a signal, so I’ll look into that, thanks.
I’ve gathered that if there was a problem with the cruise computer, the cruise light would blink, but the light is acting normal so I’m thinking the computer is fine.

I'm probably a little late but that little connector is tied up to the harness from the factory as it is an unused option on my 91 N/A.

For your cruise issue, you may want to do an ohms check on the clock spring as the cruise control will typically be the first thing to go when it starts to break down

Yes. Is the "set" signal from the switch actually making it to the CC ecu? Maybe the switch is broken?

It’s very possible that the switch is broken, my high beams aren’t working and my intermittent setting on my wiper stalk is also out. At this point the switch is my most likely suspect, thank you for the input.

Could you possibly point me to an article that has this testing procedure? As I said, I have the green book but not the volume with this kind of stuff in it 😕

Thanks for confirming, that’s kind of what I figured.
